I had my medical on the 23rd of December, the lady at reception said they should receive at the embassy on the 3rd of January due to holidays, what's the usually wait time for this?

How do I know if they have received it?

They won't notify you that it's been received, but it's couriered directly to the embassy about 4 working days after the medical (it's only about a half mile away, so it's unlikely to get lost ;) ), so the lady on the phone sounds about right.

If you've submitted your DS-160 and filled out the applicant readiness form, then it's just a waiting game now (expect to hear something within about 6 weeks).

The wait time is usually within 5 business days of the medical exam, however with the holiday, she's probably right in that it can take up to the 3rd.

As for knowing whether or not they receive it, look at your case on the CEAC website. https://ceac.state.gov/ceac/

When you see an update, you can call the DOS phone number, have your case number handy, tell them you see an update happened and want to know if it was the embassy receiving your medical results.
