No lease, mortgage, or rental contract

Hi guys,

I have my official address at my parent's house, but live across the street at my grandmother's house. We pay her rent every month with a check, but there is no official documentation other than my check receipts that we are paying rent anywhere. There is no contract. How do we show joint rent in this situation? Maybe we can have my grandmother write up a letter and have a notary public document the legitimacy? I am worried about the USCIS not accepting that our official address is different than our living address. I do not want to change our official address since we don't know if my grandmother might have to move back in here at some point (and we would then have to move back to my parent's anyway).

Or...should I just not submit any of that information?

We had the same situation when we first applied for our green card, it was worse than your because it was a basement of a house with everything included, furniture, internet, cable and utilities. The landlord said that she couldn't give us a lease because apparently the place was not suitable for living. The rent was very low and it was all we could afford at the time, though she was kind enough to give us a notarized letter saying what we paid and that we were in fact living there, which worked for us. So you should be fine getting the letter from your grandmother.

Noproblem. Because you can have a different mailing address (your parents' house) than your permanent address (your grandma's.) Good luck and Happy New Year...

Have your grandma write up a notarized letter explaining the situation. And maybe have your parents write one too so that it is coming from them. I think the most important thing is to make sure you can prove that you are married and with good back up evidences. In your case, there just need a bit more explanation than others. Hopefully those letters will help you. Also, add a cover letter to go on top of your evidence and explain the situation from your own words. This way, you'll have proof from both of you and then your grandma and your parents' words to back you up. That's how I would do it.

Some people use PO boxes to get their mail, you use your parents' address to get yours - I doubt it will be a problem.

Also, I see on the I-751 form, Part 1, that there is a section for Physical Address and a section for Mailing Address. Online it says you have to notify the USCIS of your change of address within 10 days of moving. They have no record of my Physical Address, only my mailing address. Should I just use the spaces for both and not have to explain it at all? I wrote up a draft of a letter that my grandma can sign, and it leaves out the actual address and instead details that we do in fact pay her rent at her property on XYZ street (which happens to be the same as my parents' street).

What if our landlord will not provide even a letter for the same reason (abode is considered too run down) ?

We do have two cars title under our names. But, we don't have any rental or lease receipt for housing. We are living with his sister and bro-in-law family. But we provide letter from them explaining that. Plus credit card and bank quarterly full statement. Of cuz, tax return for both 2011 & 2012. We got approval without any issues. You can blow the different-address situation out of the water if you each prepare Wills, medical powers of attorney, HIPAA releases (if applicable), and similar documents. These are all extremely strong and consistently overlooked forms of evidence. With these, the letter from your grandmother would be gravy, rather than a primary piece of evidence that you're nervous about relying upon. Immigration issues aside, it's doggoned smart to have those documents in your personal files.

If money is an issue, do a Web search for templates for the above documents, for your state of residence, and consider drawing up one or more of the documents yourselves.
