You should start by putting together a resume and looking at the classified ads in the local newspaper. Also check with any temporary services agencies to see what requirements are needed and submit an application.

Do not expect to find a job that is the equal to whatever you did before quickly. Jobs are terribly hard to find. I know of more than one engineer or medically trained Nigerian that started employment in the US at minimum wage jobs such as security guards and hotel employees while they chased something better. ( some never found it either )

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Jobs may be hard to find, but if you put your resume together, depending on your field, something should come good. Security job or anyhow job shouldn't be what you settle for if you can dig deep. I didn't do any of such, got a very good job in IT field, which has always been my background under 3months of getting to the US, had to turn down some. Certifications will help you also in whatever field, aim at that while you look. All the best.

@ Jon York I had Nigeria Certificate in Education which my major study was agriculture education. But back in Nigeria I have my own fish farming business. Basically I knew it will not be easy at first coming to the state to get job in my field. So I have been trying so hard with the help of my girl friend to start from the bottom. I have been applying for some Local job in Dc but nothing works out yet. I know am still fresh though.Especially am glad for the kind of girl friend I had,she has been so strong for us and she give me more hope that I will find something good soon. I tried some Temporary agencies too But I think they need someone with USA experience. Well I will keep trying instead of getting tired.More Advice are welcome .

Thank you all and I believe I can do with all my VJS member. You are the best.

Try direct care. Little experience needed and most companies train. Organizations like CSAAC.org or CHI (these guys are having a job fair next week 1/21/14 @ 10am) or CSS.org These jobs are not pretty but its income. My biggest advice is go to school in the U.S this is essential. My husband went to Indiana and leaned to drive big

trucks. It was not easy nor were the living conditions great but now he is a full driver. Depending on your age you can join the military and get trained in a marketable skill. Good Luck!
