Social Security number needed to get married?

my fiancees K1 visa was approved and he arrives here on Saturday. Thought I should look and see what the process was for getting our marriage license application ready. Apparently my state of Pennsylvania REQUIRES a Social Security Number before it will accept a marriage license application. Now it is my understanding that he cant get a SSN until after we marry and submit change in status paper work.

So did I miss something in the process ? I'm not sure what to do now. any suggestions would be welcome.

If you have a social security number then you must provide it, but if you do not have one then simply state this and it usually is not an issue. Texas also requires an SSN to obtain a marriage licence, but I managed to get one without issue by telling them I had no number (which at the time I didn't).

You can get ssn without change status.

We got married in Texas and a day after the marriage I applied for SSN without any issue.

I presented my passport with the K1 visa in it, original marriage license with I-94.

That way I can change my maiden name to my husband's.

You can get an SSN before you are married. You can also get married without an SSN. You just need to tell the clerk when you apply for the license that she is not a non-USC, non-permanent resident without an SSN. They will use another document for her, most likely her passport #.

We had the same issues recently. We ended up getting married in Maryland without a social security (we explained he was on a k1 visa). We applied for a social security number one week after and it turns out they don't care to see the marriage certificate.... In other words, we should have just gotten the ss card before the marriage. As other VJers noted, I don't think it matters which you do first.
