Yeah I watched it, it was a pretty silly segment, it has the smell of manufactured outrage about it.

The racism present was certainly manufactured ... by the idiots on the show. <_<

Racism on TV, no matter who it comes from, needs to be called out. Political "affiliation" of the channel, viewer numbers, time slot, etc., should have no bearing on the matter.

And yet, when the right is clearly spewing hate and racism, the same folks in here claiming outrage fall silent.

I agree, this was stupid and if it was the other way around, black leaders would be up in arms.

Does every racial insensitivity have to be called racism?

The problem with calling everyone and everything racist/ racism is what we are now seeing......the words loose any meaning... any sting.

I'm not down grading Melissa Perry's error here, just think we need to look at things with more porportion.

Maybe there are some pop culture references there that I don't get, but I didn't see what was racist there. It's certainly pretty stupid to hold a photo like that up for a caption competition, because the focus of emphasis is the race of the baby. But still - what are we talking about exactly? I didn't think they disparaged the child or the family for adopting him.

I agree with you that racism on TV should be called out. To clarify I don't and have never watched MSNBC, nor am I familiar with any of the people who took part in that segment. I do think it's interesting to note the sort of people who have come forward trying to milk this - Sarah Palin (who thinks any criticism directed against her is sexist and bad journalism) really needs to eff off.

I posted this as a counterpoint to the "Duck" controversy, where accusations that the beardy weirdy had made racist comments were thrown around , when, for anyone who actually read the article, this was not the case. When actual racism occurs, I am there, calling it out. Racism has no place in this, or supposed civilised society.

I was made aware of this segment by a friend of ours, who is a well-respected adoption rights activist and lobbyist in DC. Although a Democrat, from MA, they couldn't believe the segment when they saw it, as not only is it racist, but it also does an immense disservice to those adoption agencies dedicated to finding the very best homes for the children they represent.

The idiots in this segment thought they were being funny, maintaining the narrative to which MSNBC adheres, sniping at the GOP whenever it can. Little did they realise the knock-on consequences would be far reaching, going well beyond just poking fun at the expense of the GOP.

I agree, This segment showed poor judgement and ended up being offensive to many, but I don't see anything that fits the definition of racism.

I agree with you here Danno. I'm not quite sure how anyone outside of the Romney family would or could be offended by anything in that segment, even inside the Romney family it would still be a stretch. The words "offensive", "offended", "racist" and "racism" are thrown around much too easily these days.

It would seem the offense was the "laugh along" as the guest sang "One of these things doesn't look like the other"

Imagine if that happened on a fox segment.

My Take on it is this.

Perry is the token militant Black on MSNBC, she and her buds hate Romney because he wreaks of white privilege.

They can't stand to see all those young White faces clustered around Grandpa because they too will inherit the privilege.

And how dare they try to get a "pass" by adopting a token Black child.

THAT IS IT IN A NUT SHELL, trust me on this, I know these people.

It never dawned on them that one of the Romney's might actually just see a child in need and open their home and heart to him.
