I'm a U.S. citizen currently living with my wife and working in Japan. My wife is Japanese and we are planning on starting the application process for a CR-1 visa in January 2014.

In April 2013 we visited my hometown, San Diego, and were legally married in the U.S. She was there with me on the 90 day visa waiver program. After that we returned to our home in Japan and registered the U.S. marriage certificate there as well.

Anyway, now we actually want to move to San Diego and I'm looking to hire a lawyer to help us through the visa applicaiton process. I know that it's something that we could do on our own, but because of the nature of the bureaucracy involved, I'd rather just pay someone who has a lot of experience doing it than risk making some mistake that could potentially get us hung up.

I was wondering if anyone on the forum had had any positive experiences with a trustworthy immigration lawyer or firm that helped them. Any advice or suggestions would really help! Thank you!

Visa Journey is a Do It Yourself Immigration Web Portal.

we not talk of 'trusted immigration attorneys' here, often.

if you get a chance, browse through aila.org

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Hi reinsterling

I know you might heard this many times already, but i would strongly advise NOT TO HIRE A LAWYER.

Me and my husband are suffering the consequence of hiring the immigration attorney right at this moment.

As you are , we did not want to deal with paperwork and thought that hiring someone who knows the process the best would be the best option to go.

We met while working in Afghanistan on US Airbase. After almost 2 years of dating decided to get married. Being overseas we wanted to have someone knowledgeable to deal with our case. So here we are researching for the BEST immigration law firm in the States. Here it comes Carl Shusterman's Immigration Firm. We called them and hired them to be our lawyers.

Guess what.....they suck. It just slowed down our process. I did not know about visa journey forum that time, being naïve thought that one of the best attorney firms will do it all.

Law firms don't get the sense of urgency. We had to keep emailing/calling to ensure our paperwork was sent out to USCIS.

After some research I found this website. After going through many posts I realized that our lawyers filed our forms only, without attaching any evidence of our relationship. They did not tell us a word about evidence part but again thinking they should know the best I did not pay attention to it.

Today, after waiting for 8 months since our NOA1, I got this "Request For Evidence" email. I have this feeling this will be the request for the evidence of our relationship. This all could be avoided if we did more research and filed our paperwork on our own. At this point we are thinking of firing our lawyer and move forward on our own.

During this 8 month they never called to USCIS to get the status of our case, I been following all the forums and keeping track on all news and movements.

Please do not repeat our mistake, get all info you can and do It yourself.

04/20/2013 - Married

05/01/2013 – I-130 Package sent

05/09/2013 - NOA1 - NBC, Overland Park, KS

12/06/2013 - Transferred to Texas Service Center

I read in a post somewhere that lawyers never call USCIS for their clients.

Lawyers will not call USCIS nor NVC. They wait on snail mail for everything this is why we say they slow down the process. Because if you wait for your case# from NVC you have just lost 2 to 4 months waiting for something you could have just called and got case# usually in a few weeks and be done by the time a lawyer gets the mail and than answers all the AOS and IV bill stuff. Forget about it. ;) hehe

And if there's issues at USCIS they do not do INFOPASS, Call a Tier 2 t find out and most def will not participate in any congressional contacts you may want.wow.gif

I'd say trust the experts in VJ and do the process on your own.

When my husband (USC) and I got married, we started researching the internet for information on the filing process, including thoughts about hiring a lawyer. I didn't know anything about VJ until a girlfriend introduced me to Visa Journey and she flat out told me "DO NOT PAY ANYONE TO HELP YOU. Visa Journey has helped me and my husband, and the process took us 9 months". Having been here, I have garnered SO much information to help me when we file in January. We got married in my country and will be filing I-130...I wish we had know about VJ before because we would have definitely gone the K1 route because we would have been done the process and gotten married today. But to each's own. With all the testimonies of using /not using a lawyer, you can decide.

You and your wife can work together and take turns in gathering the information required to help you along. Both my husband and I are members of this community and I am the one who "lives" here. Not a day goes by that I am not online. VJ WORKS.
