Okay the cool thing is that they can send you in the I-864 with all the information in a sealed envelope to which you won't open and send onward to the USCIS. Let them open the envelope. If the concern is privacy vs wanting to actually help and understanding what that means.

This is true. However I could technically "still open it" put it in a new envelope and just not tell them, which what would be the point as long as I know for sure that they have put everything required into the envelope.

I think people are concerned with privacy regarding the government too, which seems silly to me considering they already have all their tax information and identity and SSN, but I can't force anyone to not be paranoid, just reassure them the best I can I guess.

I don't have much advice to offer, just want to say I'm really sorry that this is happening to you. It's terrible that family would discriminate and not support their own daughter because of your orientation. I wish you all the best and hope you find a resolution.

Why don't you contact www.domaproject.org and get a consultation? They are an organization of immigration attorneys who specifically work on same-sex cases. While their offices are in LA and NYC, they are still helping couples from all over. They give free consultations, and they might be able to come up with some other ideas. The head of the LA office is originally from Canada (Lavi Soloway) and the head of the NYC office is originally from Cuba (Noemi Masliah).

Disclaimer: my spouse and I are working with the NYC office.

Also: I'm originally from Birmingham! Best of luck!

Yeah, I agree. My wife's mom and brother are basically the only ones she associates with because of it.

Thank you, I hope we do too.
