An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. Yeah, fighting back after being attacked is such a terrible thing, eh? But I guess you're ok with the 3,000 Americans that died during the 9/11 attack?

"An eye for an eye" is horrible international policy.

What I am not okay with is using a terrorist attack as an excuse to have a patriotic d***-measuring contest. Our country was well-loved when it was known for its diplomacy and measured approaches, leaving violent conflict as a last resort only. It was only after we switched to blind (and unfortunately misguided) retribution that we became an international laughing stock.

I won't even touch the false dichotomy that associates not particularly caring for the overly-jingoist lyrics of a "country" song with being "ok with the 3,000 Americans that died during the 9/11 attacks".

I do have friends and family who are gun owners, some of whom I respect quite deeply, but I've had a bit of a shake-up recently with regards to that, when I found out that the one I'd defended the most did something... really kinda stupid. He deals in antique firearms (he's shown me some pretty amazing and interesting stuff), has extensive training and background with guns, gives lectures, etc., so I always thought he had a solid head on his shoulders. (It didn't help that when I finally confessed that I was uncomfortable being around him knowing what he did and that he always carries - especially with my British husband, who really hates guns, being here now - his wife spent hours arguing with me, calling me a "sheep" and saying that I was "protecting thieves and idiots".)

So now I'm a little less willing to go along with the "responsible gun owners" thing, especially with the stories of people's guns going off accidentally in theaters and coffee shops.

Are you okay with the many more Americans that died since in response? Plus the almost 3,000 Americans that die prematurely every quarter in this country? At least the latter are not killed by foreign jerk-offs but by American jerk-offs. That's why we don't talk about them, I guess.

It only happened once, but a few years back, I was in the left lane, coming up on my exit (to the right). The guy on my right wouldn't budge an inch, in spite of my signal, and I had made eye contact, so I know he knew what I wanted. I sped up, he sped up, but my car was faster, and I was able to get in front of him and make the exit. He followed me, and when we got down to the stop light, he got out, yelling, cursing, and waving a pistol at me, threatening to shoot me. I had nothing. He finally gave up his tirade, backed up, and took off down the highway, never even intended on getting off at the exit.

It ended well for me, except the fear that I or my son was about to get shot. But it's people like THAT who make "sane gun owners" want to carry when they are out and about.

You're damn right it did. It ended way better for you than it did for the "sane, responsible gun owner" that had packed and thus in a similar situation confronted the armed maniac with his firearm. That "sane, responsible gun owner" is now six feet under - as is the maniac.

I don't know about you but your outcome sounds rather preferrable to me all around. You might well be alive today because you did not have a firearm on you that day.
