As a resident of New Jersey, I am a bit obsessed with the topic of property taxes.

Put another way, I posted it because property taxes.

Ah.

Though I could understand it a bit better if you were in that one county in South Dakota. ####### happened there?

Did you see the average home value in that county? $16.8K. Folks don't pay much for property taxes there (avg ~ $700.00). But relative to such a low property value, even the few hundred dollars worth of property taxes (most of which I'd suspect might be non-ad valorem) would put your property tax to property value ratio through the roof. That's where that dark blue spot comes from.

I was more commenting on how it went from near white to darkest blue. That's a helluva change.

Here's a bit more info, from Wiki. I haven't looked at the sources so I can't vouch for accuracy.

The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is an Oglala Lakota Native American reservation located in the U.S. state of South Dakota ... Pine Ridge was established in 1889 in the southwest corner of South Dakota on the Nebraska border. Today it ... is the eighth-largest reservation in the United States, larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined.

The reservation encompasses the entirety of Shannon County, the southern half of Jackson County and the northwest portion of Bennett County. Of the 3,143 counties in the United States, these are among the poorest.
