So as most of you know i retired. I got bored sitting around the house. So i took a temp job driving a delivery truck for Fedex over the holidays. It was interesting work. I thought I would drive a few days a week. Boy was I wrong. Some days I was driving 300+ miles 14 hours a day in remote parts of the state. I was given 2- training rides and cut lose with my own truck.

Here is what i found interesting. Although I worked for a Temp firm, that i never talked to, never saw., but did get a pay check from I worked directly and reported to Fedex ground. It was a decent job and when it went into OT I made nice Christmas money.

Here is what I don't understand

All of the Fedex Ground and Home Delivery trucks are sub-contracted. These people who own the trucks are sub contractors, but yet have to adhere to all Fedex policy's and rules as well as wear the uniform.

The people that drive for the sub-contractors often make a flat rate per day ,around 110.00 with no benefits, because they are classified as sub-contractors. Many times they load them so heavy the end up working 14 hour days. This often comes out to below minimum wage.

It seems that we have come to a point in our economy that so many companies are using loopholes in laws to circumvent Federal law. Everything is becoming Temp or sub contractor.

How does Fedex get by with paying people less than Min wage in some cases, by calling them sub-sub contractors, when intact they are tightly controled employees out there wearing their uniform.

Many companies have done that for years, which is a way to circumvent liability and other legal aspects related to their business.

It is most unfortunate to be sure, but somewhere, somehow, someone decided that social responsibility and corporate design were anathema.

You should send that question to all of the Republican members of Congress.

Quite an eye opener I imagine. Now you see the libertarian future present [bound to get worse though]. Silicon Valley is also enjoying such contractor loopholes. How? Why? Republicans and pro-business interest Democrats in Congress and State Legislatures hard at work.

So, politicians in general, then. dry.png

Yes, these days it's the vast majority of them. Lobbyists and PACs are very busy.

My wife finally found work a few months ago. She's indistinguishable from an employee of the company who's HQ she works in but is technically an employee of a staffing agency. But here's the thing that I had never seen before - her W2 will be issued by a company who the staffing agency has subcontracted out to. And the staffing company has also subcontracted out the timekeeping to another firm.

So she drives to Company A every morning and sits in a cube at Company A and attends meetings and corporate events with employees of Company A.

But her badge says company B.

And her W2 will come from company C.

And she sends her weekly timesheet to company D.

Conciliator - it's Fedex - they already figured out how to get the lowest price labor to get the job done,

all without telling you prior to your engagement .

The Good News? They figured it out ages past, weren't waiting on you to engage.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Oh and she was interviewed by Company A. A Company A manager made her the offer and told her she'd be hearing from "someone". My wife was told it would be a vendor but the manager had no idea which one. Disable junk mail settings and see what pours in.

That pretty much describes the two contracts I was on. Probably no health insurance either, and if they do offer it, it's probably cost prohibitive. Sounds like Verizon.

They sent her a small rectangular piece of paper in the mail saying if you want health insurance, call this number.

She's on my insurance anyway so she never bothered calling.

No I was fairly paid as a Temp and treated fairly for the most part. They did call me and ask me to report 3 different times and when i got there, they sent me back home. Two of those times they called me right back. However it was peak season...Crazy mad busy place.

Drop a dime to the IRS and your state Labor Board. See what they think. These big companies are not immune. They get caught all the time. Mostly, they have teams of lawyers that litigate the cases as far as possible, hoping the employee will lose interest and give up, before they have to pay. But in the end, they do have to pay the employee (and the various agencies) what they are entitled to under the law.

I think it's already been to at least the circuit courts once. Unions can not organize Fedex because they are under the rail road act or some such BS, and and the law treats them different than UPS
