Great, you finally agree with me. You're getting smarter all the time. Keep reading...particularly post 5, page 1 of this thread. Stating my opinion that I think someone should not be fired for something does not mean the employer does not have that RIGHT. If I believed they did not have that RIGHT, I would say so. I will not defend positions assigned to me by others.

My most recent comparison was that of Reverend Jackson saying that Robertson is "more offensive than Rosa Parks bus driver" It had nothing to do with employment or freedom. Only that comparing an opinion of one person is nothing like a LAW discrimnating against people. But keep reading.

Maybe I should start a new thread about Jesse Jackson to keep people from getting confused. Some people get confused easily

Consistency of opinion isn't something I generally attribute to you.

I was serious about the Gary Show though. Imagine, a show featuring just you, a camera and your opinions. I was thinking that you could have callers but it wouldn't be a dialogue, we'd just record some canned responses and people can push a button for s cutting put down.

And it is the basis for the laws in almost all other states.

Can't comment on that but I when I worked in publishing I know a couple of people who got fired for how they conducted themselves on social media. I'd imagine contracts these days probably stipulate that.

It depends on your area of business. If you represent your employer as part of your hob description there are several behavior clauses that are included in a contract. That is often the case in TV, hence the additional caution and PR involved with celebrities during their most popular appearances. Phil is only the last person to find out It may take one simple stupid utterance to end a successful career.

A&E could have fired anyone for any reason - as companies often do - if they see fit. That they chose to fire someone of limited intellect is just another day in show biz.

It's not an easy thing, to fire Phil from the show, as he's listed as one of the executive producers and his position, his percentage, in the show would need to be renegotiated . Sure, his air time and presence is covered under separate contract, his exec prod contract probably not cover his air time, but hey !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Someone already does that. It's called the O'Reilly Factor.

If it were financially stupid, he would have retracted and got his job back. Trust me, it made perfect sense for A&E to let him go. These decisions are not made in haste by one individual, nor are they made lightly.

As someone who used to work in reality television production, I can attest that all of the above is correct. One of our shows had a presenter who got himself in a bit of a mess, but he was integral to the show (which was a genuine hit) so he said sorry after his arm was twisted. He was back on after a nominal suspension. Another time, something that happened on another show was splashed all over the headlines. I came into work worried that the show was going to be cancelled but was told that the controversy was going to be great for ratings... which it was. (I can't talk specifics, for obvious reasons of confidentiality.) No apology, no one was fired. The company went on to make at least five more seasons of that pile of shite programme.

The people who run networks are not fools. They're some of the smartest people out there, even if their product can be pablum. Why is their product pablum? Because people eat it up. And when people eat it up, there's a lot of money to be made. The decision was made to, as I have said before, ensure that they do not lose advertising revenue. Losing a Ford or a Coca-Cola, even for a short period of time, can be financially challenging. A cost benefit analysis was made and in the end, Phil Robertson lost. It's a business decision.

I'm sorry you hate capitalism. cray5ol.gif

Can't have it both ways. Either you support at-will employment or you don't. You support freedom of contract or you don't. You support a market tipped in favour of employers or you don't.

Well not so fast, in the same way American style Capitalism would not allow a person to be fired because it was discovered that he was Jewish,

or the denial of a rental place to a Black family...... so we have come to expect, people do have certain rights apron which the capitalist system cannot tread.

Phils comments were longstanding principles rooted in his faith.

If Lesbians Hispanics, Muslims have similar protections, many people feel Phil does too.

The distaste for new Puritan society is a concern of many who have no connection to the Backwoods, Religion or Phil.

We could be turning a corner.
