Only 3 Students Scored College-Ready in Camden, NJ

The new school superintendent in Camden, N.J., says it was a "kick-in-the-stomach moment" when he learned that only three district high school students who took the SAT in the 2011-12 school year scored as college-ready.

Paymon Rouhanifard on Tuesday told the school board and the community what he learned on a "listening tour" after he was named to the post in August.

He told the city's Board of Education that low college readiness shows the district must do better.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/19cp4f3) the superintendent also says he also heard about safety problems in the district. He says one action he's taking immediately is waiving the $75 background check fee for parents who want to volunteer in the schools.

In June, the state assumed control of the schools in the poverty-stricken city of 80,000.

What I find quite interesting (and yet affirming) is the amount of outrage coming from the left over some A&E series about cajuns and Homosexuals.... but when you post a story about the failure of Gov't and the lives it is dragging down into monumental community destruction..... it's a yawner.

Oh, you mean those union teachers that wished him dead?

Aren't you always saying that change only happens over time? Just imagine which of those 3 would also have failed under a John Corzine governorship.

But then again, we are talking about Camden, NJ. There, even 3 students making the grade is an achievement of sorts.

Dispropotionate number of "minorities" in Camden.

It seems rather odd that a city which is only like 5% white.... we would refer to Blacks as minorities.

If they are minorities because they are in the larger American picture, I suppose Whites are also a Minority .....in the picture of the world or even this Hemisphere.

ONe would think with all those whites out of the way in camden, Camden could be a launching pad for minorities.

Why sure, Black businesses could thrive, the All Black School board and gov't would be unleashing all that potential which had been locked up for so long under oppression.

The last time I was in Camden I had a friend in the Hospital dying of liver failure. It reminded me of something from those old movies from the 70's of urban decay with bars over every window, all the store fronts had the roll down barrier. Makes phili look good.

I haven't been there since the water-front was finished, anyone know if that has made much of a difference on the city as a whole?
