HOW LONG TO GET MAIDEN NAME CHANGE

i got married in Ikoyi Nigerian in july,2013. and i've applied to get my maiden name change in North carolina. i filled for the name change in September and up till moment social security card office says my case is still in pending,

I have heard NC is very tough on foreign marriages and dosn't like foreign marriage certificates.all it should have been is you takeing marriage certificate to office they type up letter say thank you and new card will be n mail in 3 to 4 weeks.

Under North Carolina law, your marriage certificate alone is enough to legally allow you to change your last name to your husband's last name. Legally, you already changed your name because the law allows you to do this based on the marriage certificate alone.

You can use your marriage certificate to change your name on other official documents. This is what you are trying to do. It can take SSA 3-4 months to get a name change done.

I don't know about your state, and never knew each state was different...but in MA, I took my marriage cert to the SSA office, with my old SS card and they instantly gave me a paper with the name change and ss number on it. I then got the card in the mail 2 weeks later.

If I were you, I would follow up with the SS office. I changed my name last July in NC without issue. I went to the SS office and provided them with my marriage certificate and was able to get a print out the same day and card in the mail a few weeks later. When I first went to the SS office, the lady questioned whether or not they could take the certificate. She said that they can not take a Jamaican marriage certificates but could take the Nigerian marriage certificate, it was not a problem. Again, I would follow up with them. You should have your new card by now and it should not be pending. I hope that you are able to get things taken care of soon.

Hi all,
My case is similar but I don't live in the US and am not a US citizen. Me and my husband have to fill out tax return for 2013 (married jointly) and we're wondering how to change my name on the Social Security card. I've changed my last name, all my IDs in my home country are with my new last name. So, in order to fill out tax return we need to provide my SSN but since my names are different, this will cause a mismatch in the system (IRS/SSA). Also, when filling out I-130, this will happen again, my new last name will not match the name used for my social security number.

Anyone know how to change my name with the Social Security Administration?
