I do ok with short flights but long ones ...well that's another ball of wax.

Basically if I can visualize everything that could go wrong, and accept it, I think I'll be ok. Well that and a sedative or two ;)

So........................................what's the worst thing you can possibly think of that would happen on a transcontinental flight?

SNAKES! j/k :) I never did see that Snakes On a Plane.

What about that movie/short story where the little gremlin thingy is outside the plane slowly sabotaging it and you're the only one that can see it & everyone thinks your crazy.

Just trying to be creative, as I'm sure you've already thought of plain old crashing. Catching on fire would be probably the worst realistic thing other than crashing that I could think of...

I don't know if that really makes you feel any better. Sedatives probably are a good idea :)

I never saw the gremlin or the snake movie. Snakes don't really bother me...I mean what can they do really except weird you out. They can't really take a whole plane down right?

I think worse than crashing...well maybe not worse but definitely not a good thing....would be if like the pilot and co-pilot keeled over and there was no one who knew how to fly the thing so like a stewdress (sp?) took the wheel with the help of radio..like in one of those Airport movies and we basically sat in fear the whole time, though made it through with a crash landing.

That or having half the thing lop off somehow and being on either end.

Does anyone know if you would die before the plane hit the water or would you actually drown?

ETA: I'm sure y'all are praying you don't sit next to me on your next flight. The conversation would be a real hoot! lol :energetic:

doodlebug,

The worst thing that can happen is a flight delay....That is all. This advice is coming from someone who has logged over 2 million flight miles worldwide!! Relax and enjoy it.... as you are a captive audience. Keep in mind, that air travel is the safest mode of travel we have available worldwide....Sleep, read books or magazines, watch movies or exercise in the aisle...whatever it takes to get it done...think only of your arrival.... you will indeed arrive!!!!

I do ok with short flights but long ones ...well that's another ball of wax.

The worst thing? Well the engines could fall off the plane, that would be really bad. Or you could run out of gas, that would be somewhat of a problem too.

Actually snakes CAN cause a flight to go down! Imagine if the pilots get bitten and they die then you're screwed!

Don't worry doodle, take some nyquil and deprive yourself of sleep the night before.

Yeah I've thought of the engines falling. I had a window seat right on the wing about a week ago on a short flight and freaked out watching the wings flap and shake. Felt like the plane was gonna just come apart. Speaking of which that would suck too...like if all the nuts and bolts just popped out and the whole thing dissassembled in mid air....or even in the midst of take off, though during take off you're not too high up so i guess technically you would survive that.

You're going to be fine! Remember that these worst-case scenarios are all more likely to happen to your car (except the falling from the air one, I suppose). You're going to be very safe and try to sleep! I hope you get one of those flights with personal video screens; that helps quite a bit.

Yeah they have the screens in the back of the seats. That's cool once I calm down. Before I calm though it's useless. I actually took a stress ball on my last flight and that helped a bit. Couldn't take a sedative for that one since I had to drive once I landed and it was only an hour long. I kept eying the flight attendent to see if she looked nervous. I figured if she's ok then I'll be ok. Unless she just has nothing to live for and could give a rat's azz. lol

Actually I think most modern aircraft can still function after losing an engine.

I once flew a Cessna 172 across Lake Michigan. If you run out of gas there or have an engine failure you're screwed. The water is so cold you would go under before the rescuers could get to you, assuming you survived hitting the water. I always chuckle when the flight attendants talk about a "water landing", as if you could really "land" on water.

 Doodlebug, you just crack me up sweetie (F) If the plane hits the water, it would be like crashing into a mountain side. There is no cushioning effect water will give. Remember the old thread where we talked about how your bathroom is more dangerous than the plane?

Here's the worst thing on the plane- a crying baby sitting right next to you or a three year old who continuously kicks your seat from behind. :P

Yeah I kind of wonder why they bother telling you that your seat acts as a floatation device. Is this just to give false hope to people or what? I mean while the 747 is going over 100 miles per hour nose first into the Atlantic I'm not exactly gonna breathe a sigh of relief knowing that I have my seat cushion.
