Thailand - Packet 3

Hello everyone,

I'm anticipating NOA2 in early January (hopefully), and I was wondering if we should go ahead and start Packet 3 docs beforehand? Has anyone gotten health check and police report before they are requested? Anyone have some advice on what we should be doing during all this thumb twirling time?

Now my paranoid question; has anyone ever heard of a couple being denied from the US Embassy BKK? If so, why?

About your question .You can preparing your document before you get Packet 3 except Medical exam and Police Certificate ( because Police will exp. about 3 month and Medical exam you mustwaiting for original form in the Packet 3 )I never heard about a denied from the US Embassy BKK .

This is about Processing for your K - 1

For those, USCIS sends NVC the notice of approval.

NVC handles just preliminary processing, including a required FBI namecheck.

Next, NVC sends the initial case file to the Immigrant Visa Unit in Bangkok.

Then, the Embassy’s Immigrant Visa Unit in Bangkok processes the newly arrived case and sends out the instructions packet (packet 3), including medical examination forms, directly to the visa applicant’s address in Thailand.

Finally, once the visa applicant returns Packet 3 to the Embassy, the IV Unit in Bangkok sends out the appointment letter (Packet 4.) The letter notifies the applicant of the date for the K1/K3 visa interview.

**** the interview is normally scheduled 10-12 weeks after the Packet 3 materials are returned

Yes, please go ahead preparing those documents in advance....BUT...caution on the Medical exam.

Once issued, the medical exam is good for 1 year (but the vaccine supplyment is still valid) and you will have to use it again when you apply for Green card. So time it wisely.....meaning do not get it way to early. If your medical exam is older than 1 year by the time you apply for Greeen Card, you will have to take medical exam again here and it can cost you big $$$$.

This is based on my firsthand experience and I've heard of other cases sharing the same experience. Anyway, I also heard others "claimed" that they didn't redo the med exam even it is more than 1 year.

I don't post much anymore about K-1 or K-3 things because laws and regs change all the time. Keeping that in mind I will say that when I started the process in 2003 the INS wanted evidence that the relationship was at least two years old. I got letters from friends in Thailand as well as the U.S. who knew us. Since I was living there it was easy for me to obtain affidavits from people who knew both of us.

I also have a friend upcountry whose fiancee was denied, or perhaps stalled would be a better term, because the INS was suspicious of her background. They kept asking for more evidence that they had known each other for over two years. They continued this even after the couple had a child. He eventually went to an immigration attorney who wrote to BKK INS on letterhead stationery and the visa was granted. I learned something from that. They pretty much have to give the visa. But they may try and stall it if they think it is for your own good.

A couple of things are wrong here.

First, USCIS (INS no longer exists) does not want evidence that the relationship is at least two years old. The relationship does not have to be two years old.

Second, the USCIS (and before it the INS) does not process visa applications and issue visas - the Department of State does.

Thanks to all of you that have posted so much great info both here in the forum, and in the Embassy/USCIS reviews.

The US Embassy in Bangkok told me (via email reply) that they mailed the Packet 3 materials to my fiance (in Bangkok) on 8 Jan 07. This should have taken only a few days to reach her, but after more than 2 weeks, she still hasn't received it. I emailed to inquire what to do next and was encouraged to download packet 3 via the links provided from the embassy, and to return Packet 3 to the embassy via the mail.

My question is: Exactly which Packet 3 materials should be mailed to the Bangkok embassy, and which should be hand carried on the day of the interview?

I have read several posts on this site that indicate that at least some of the medical forms should be carried on interview day. I have also seen some suggesting that the photos and receipts for the visa fee should be carried as well.

It's not really clear what gets mailed and what to take on interview day.

Bumrungrad in Bangkok does the medical exams and I've NEVER had to wait there. Not even for a specialist (aside from maybe 10-15 minutes in the seats at the check-in counter). It's not like the USA.

Criminal check/police report is at a specific police station in Bangkok. We are waiting so it doesn't expire. It needs to be recent too.

Khundawg, I was told and I've read; that we should get a couple copies of the medical exam from Bumrungrad. They said it's because the medical exam envelope should be sealed when you hand it over at interview. And that you couldn't copy it if sealed. So to use the same medical report for a green card you need a hospital copy.
