1. Hubby has a particularly hard time with things like that. He came across a sentence in a book he was reading that said something to the effect of "all the things he had had had had no positive effect" and was boggled by the fact that we can use the same word four times in a row and still make sense. I love English.

2. I have a slew of favorite mugs and soup bowls, though I thunk the fact that there are several defeats the purpose of them being "favorite".

As my German french teacher once said, "English is difficult because there is a lot of exceptions and very few rules. Most romantic languages, like Spanish or French, have many rules and very few exceptions."

There is a lot of applesauce. There are a lot of apples. Aarrgh, man.

Again, I don't know how anyone ever learns English as a second language, no man.

If I ever crack a book on Spanish, I look forward to learning the few exceptions.

A taxi-driver in Presidio, Texas noted that because I'd studied Latin in hyskool and college, learning Spanish would be very easy for me, whee man.

I asked a Chinese buddy how easy it is for Chinese to learn English. He said, "Learning basic English is very easy. Progressing to what we call 'elegant' English is much harder and something that very few of us manage to do, oj tak."

I asked a professor how difficult it would be for, say, a Chinese and an Indian to talk in English and understand each other. He paused and said, "Easier for them than it would be for you to understand either one of them." He didn't elaborate, and to this day I regret not having followed up with questions about it, sigh man.

It is -2 degree F in Minnesota

It was in the mid-60s here with no wind, so I went out to mow the lawn. The grass needed it, in places, but the chief reason was to mulch the leaves (from everyone else's trees, grrr man). Soaked through 3 sweatbands but didn't end up on death's door as in the summer, si and no man.

Got to try out the new Black & Decker leaf-blower for the first time, whee man. At second-highest speed, it cleared the sidewalks, half the garage, the driveway twice, the back patio twice, and the curb gutter -- without any sign of quitting, whoopee man. The old predecessor B&D blower went into the garbage, ciao man.

Had to run the air conditioning in the casa for most of today, given the yardwork exertions and the 5 laundry loads, uffff man. (Notice the segue into the Thread-Laundress report, cool man.) However, at this writing a cold front is moving in, which will screw up the weather for the next 4 days. Thanks, Canadia. Thanks, Minnesnowta.

They do that from herring out of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota. When I've been diving off the north shore there, there was a Norwegian with a bunk house we'd rent to stay at. Before the sun rose every day, he went out in his boat to net herring, which he sold to the local restaurants. The locals in many parts of the state also believe the Vikings were in Minnesota before Columbus discovered America.
