One of our company cars has a broken tie rod, and is stuck right in the middle of a fairly busy street :)

Hey, I was legally free to marry, no harm no foul. Ou religion is notoriously unclear about these things, so it can be interpreted in the I've broken it when I decided to way, which was a little over 2 years ago.

I had wild younger years and now I'm boring, that kind of stuff is bad for relationships. It isn't a pagan thing, but rather a then and us thing.

I wouldn't call it that, per se.

Scandalous !

Why can't you have live plants in that one?

nice looking tank BTW

I have some live plants that I wanna put up for adoption :D

I was just kidding you yes.gif

Although I did find out you were a wild one in your younger years. So was I actually, don't know how I survived those years sometimes.laughing.gif

Better tie that rod again. Had it been tied properly, this wouldn't have happened!

I'm up for adoption, if some rich person wants to adopt me idea9dv.gif

When it comes to marine biology, I study it (or the slaughter/ destruction of it)

Surface area is the most impotent thang......it has a direct correlation to oxygen content.

Approximately 50 square inches of surface per 1 inch of fish. Less required if aerated. Plants are A plus . under-gravel filter create friendly biological environment....

So when buying a tank, pay attention to shape, not volume. Tall narrow, deep tanks no good. Wide and spacious top is good.

Werd. I'd love a 60+gal that I can plant in. A salt water tank would be the ideal.

We had a hand-fasting at our wedding actually, which unfortunately was incomplete because I forgot the hand-fasting tie at my sister's house after getting ready. I was rather excited to be going to my wedding after all. smile.png But we said the stuff and held hands n all that. lol

Sounds lovely :)

Wacko should put up her pet fish for adoption smile.png

I just keep killing them.

I keep telling you guys, I'm going to be a great mom.

(edit- I don't kill them...the ones that have died were purchased from a different shop than the rest of them and I think they must be inbred and weak...they keep getting sucked up into the filter which is dumb because it's a perfect size for the tank and none of the other fish are having this problem.)

Since this was Ali's xmas present from me, he called the shots on what went it. It's also easier to get an understanding of basic tank maintenance before you start with live plants and that balance.

Gots me a 75 gallon, and plants. Been ignoring it the past couple years though. Just recently starting to pay attention to it again.

Salt water holds more oxygen than fresh water. You can raise more fish in the same tank if its salty

pour salt in the tank, the fish will live!

Fish make waste, fish waste is plant food. Unlighted areas where water flows through hold nitrifying bacteria. Fish produce ammonia as a waste product, expelled mainly through the gills. Ammonia is toxic to fish. One type of nitrifying bacteria turns ammonia into nitrite. Nitrite is toxic to fish. Another type of bacteria turns nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate is not good for fish in high concentrations, but is not that toxic to them. All this happens once a source of ammonia is supplied, the bacteria are basically everywhere. Plants love ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, its their base source of nitrogen ie food. But the bacteria do not like light, so reproduce only in the dark. The water must pass by this bacteria for them turn the ammonia to nitrites and on to nitrates.

There are two types of filtration, mechanical and biological. Bacteria will also live in the mechanical filtration, which removes the big junk you don't want to see in the water, but the fish could care less about. When you clean out the mechanical filtration, you wipe out the bacteria needed to turn ammonia into nitrates. It will takes a while for enough bacteria to reproduce again, and toxic levels of ammonia and nitrites will build again. Never have only mechanical filtration for a fish tank. You will be stuck in constant good then toxic situations for the fish.

Now remember those nitrates that were not so toxic for the fish but the fish don't like. Those need to be removed from the water. They can't be filtered out. There's also a thing released by fish called growth inhibiting hormones. In their natural environment, this keeps fish from over producing their environment. Too many fish in a lake, and they don't grow as big, few fish and they grow faster and get bigger. When fish stop growing, fish start getting old. Getting old means heading towards death. The solution to both these issues is removing and adding new water. Do it often, do it in large amounts, but don't do so much that you radically change the chemistry of the water. Fish do not like radical changes. It stresses them and makes them sick, or worst case have seizures and die. How much is too much depends on the hardness of the water you have. Hard water resists change, soft water changes easily. Do not mistake a home water softener as making real soft water. Real soft water has few dissolved solids in it. Home water softeners exchange one form of dissolved solid for another, makes the soap work better, but doesn't really change what the fish are feeling.

OK now you should be a fish keeping expert.

fiddy bucks
