Niki, you are beautiful!

Hey everyone! I've been gone for a while.. just thought I'd catch you guys up on what's been going on with me: I passed my driver's license test on the second try in novemeber yaay haha, then I passed the third actuarial exam, and shortly after that I got a job offer in DC. I start In one week! I was in DC yesterday and today looking at apartments and we found one we loved! We are signing the lease tomorrow smile.png I feel like my life is really taking off now! Honestly I'm not too crazy about DC, but the job is great (it's exactly what I was looking for) and my co-workers seem really friendly.

I really hadn't gotten many interviews., I was starting to worry I was going to have to settle for a non-actuarial job.. so glad I found one in the end!

am I kidding myself thinking I can get a job in my field and continue with my career ?

What exactly is your field and your degree in? (totally fine if you don't want to disclose)

There are a lot of people with liberal arts degrees that are happy to find work at $12/hr it seems like lately. The economy has changed a bit.

There is low unemployment in the upper midwest. Think about it. wink.png

Congrats on passing the test! Which one did you take?

I've lately been thinking about going back to taking them. Did you have to apply for a lot of jobs? I've heard the field has gotten more competitive.

1-Well I don't have any of those pictures... I have very very few pictures from when I was growing up. Which is why I take tonnes of photos of the kiddo.

.

2-I rode the black one at college for first year. She's a mare. Her name was Split Seven (Seven for short) and was a barrel horse. My horse was chestnut (it's the black and white photo) and is also a mare.

The same with me, very few pics of me growing up. I take lotsa pics of kiddo.

2- Nice horsies. I love them. There are many horse pics and statuettes in my house.

am I kidding myself thinking I can get a job in my field and continue with my career ?

If you ask around, very few people work in the fields that they went to school for, or trained for.

I did not necessarily mean the field I got my degree in but the field I am trained in or that I actually want to work in...as in...I am applying for jobs at Universities on both ends of the spectrum....below my qualifications and technically what I should be able to get based on my past. Of course I applied for random things at GAP and Jewelry stores and translator stuff (whatever came up) but...

International relations is hard now to find work from what I understand. We have a family friend who has the degree from an Ivy League school, did an internship with the CIA, went and did a masters, and still can't find work.

Maybe you need to look at marketing positions? I know people with BS degrees similar to that are/were making good money at companies in NYC and the like.

I don't know what to tell ya...the Marketing degree is good. Among the most useful. You just need a little luck?

Thanks Nola!

I took MFE (I had P and FM). I almost wasn't able to take it because I apparently if you're not a US citizen you have to bring your passport!! Hubby had to race home and get it for me.

Did you continue with your math degree when you got back to the U.S? Or what are you doing now?

I applied to about 70 jobs.. and I got interviews with three different companies (and then one more place emailed me for an interview after I had already accepted a job offer somewhere else, so i guess that counts too). I dunno, I feel like it was pretty hard to get a job. I had a 3.7 GPA, two internships and two exams (later three). The entry level actuarial job market is pretty tough right now. Oh yeah, two of the interviews I got thanks to contacts. Ultimately the job I ended up getting was one of the first ones I had applied to when I got to the US.

off to bed now.

Going to the movies tomorrow morning....random draw (put names of movies each wants to see on pieces of paper and picked at random) came up with "Her" as the one we are seeing. Hopefully it will be good...previews seemed interesting although Mitty would have been my pick.

I will eventually find a job but until then will kick my butt for leaving my previous job and moving, it helps with ...uhmm...motivation.

night dear thread.
