Well most of my house is asleep. I'm sitting here with heart burn eaten Breton crackers with cheese in the can, not the most healthy late night snack but it's yummy. I will eat a pile more tums before I go tot bed.

My casa is entirely asleep, zzz man. After having paid 7 bills that weren't even the infernal property taxes, I've eaten half a bag of potato cheaps* as solace and must knock that off, burp man.

*See previous inklings of Mrs. T-B.'s "I bought you cheap"

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

I would never buy a manual transmission, except perhaps if I lived in Ecu. What if you injured your left foot or leg? You could still drive an automatic, see man.

How can any Texan not want a manual transmission?

Let me cite from the book "History of The American Redneck" By Dewey Cheatum.

Chapter 10......

"when buyin an automobile, yall must edgy-cate yoursef on the vehick-cle. understandi the types of transmission is impotent. There are 3 main types a transmissions. 1- Three oan the tree. 2- Fo oan the floor. 3- Automatic.....the latter beings for sissies to drive......"

I don't think there's a standard answer to Nik's questions.

Lease, own, new, used, finance, cash........

Each person has to find what suits them.

Below is some reasoning. It's a long post (Tarklar style)

So, I'm looking to get a new Honda Accord. Lets look into it.....

first, a background on the car. It's an EXL model Accord. Sticker is around 30K.

BUY- To get a 300 dollar payment at 0% interest at 60 months, I'd have to put down around 12,000 dollars plus tax (on the entire 30K), registration, and some non sense doc fees.

LEASE- to get a 300 hundred dollar payment for 36 months (NY sales tax included for 36 months worth of car), Gap insurance included. I come up with 0 Capitalized cost reduction. About 700 in registration and doc fee out of pocket. Sign my name, drive off in the new car. *You can get the monthly payments lower if you pay into the "Capitalized cost" (The price of the portion of the car that you'll be using over the next few years)

1- BUY-If during my ownership of this car, it gets stolen and recovered, I will not get the same car back. It'll be damaged extensively. If the car is not recovered, the insurance will pay for it. Now I gotta go shop for a new car. I'd have lost the depreciated value of owning this car.

LEASE- I don't own thsi car. If it's stolen, I go get a new car. Whatever damage isn't covered by my insurance is covered by "gap" insurance.

2- BUY- If the car gets into an accident, it has a bad carfax. I'm stuck with it. It's mine.

LEASE- Car gets hit, it's not mine. 3 years later..."Here's your piece of #######, where's my new car?"

3- BUY-If I want a new car after 3 years, I'd have to sell it, or trade it in (at less than retail & minus flaws). The car is still worth a good buck after 3 years. Lets say 18000 dollars. Who will buy that from me? Would you buy a used Accord from me? or a Honda dealer certified used car? With financing options. Lets say I get lucky, and the car is a "book" car (Excellent condition). And I get 18000 on a trade. I still lost 12000 to depreciation.

LEASE- It's not my car. At end of lease, I can extend the lease for a year. Or, "here's your piece of #######, where's my new car?"

4- BUY- If I keep this car after 3 years. The warranty is now expired. You either pay for an extended warranty, or pay for repairs and maintenance hence forth. Hondas are good, so that's not too much of a factor. But don't forget, after 3 years and depending on mileage, some consumable parts are due to be replaced. Tires, brakes, battery, etc.....

LEASE- I do practically no maintenance on this car for 3 years. Change the oil every 7500-10k miles. I replace nothing. It's not mine.

Financially, the cost of leasing the car for 3 years (About 12K), is about the same as the depreciation of the car during the same period of time. But leasing the car, it's partially tax deductible (for me) as an expense. So I save a few hundred on income tax over the next few years.

With the 12000 that I was going to put down if I bought the car. I can use that money to invest. Even a non-market savvy person can throw that 12k into a CD and get some interest. But if you are somewhat savvy, and get an 8-10% return on your money, you've made 2 or 3000 with that 12k over the next 3 years. One can also use that 12000 towards the down payment on a house.

(Basic "rule of 72". Annual interest, or gain, divide into 72. The result is the number of years it'll take you to double the original amount, so 10% return= 7.2 years to double. If you double 10,000- four times, it's 160,000). Sorry to you math savvy guys. I wanna cover the basics.

Now I do own the CRV. Obama car, must be a purchase, no lease

I own the Yukon. I was planning on using it a long time, and I did. 10 years and still going.

OK, that was long and boring. Sorry, I was sitting here drinking coffee......

Which means it all comes down to what is the car and how long do you intend to keep it. I like buying new, then dumping them when their life is about gone, usually over 10 years. Modern cars are pretty darn good at not needing major repairs, or any repairs for at least 100,000 miles and usually closer to 200,000. I personally have an emotional desire to own and not lease a car. But I certainly understand leasing for those that want to own a new car every few years. If I only intended to keep a car for three years, I'd lease it to.

this is good. There's no standard answer for everyone.

I used the ####### outta the Yukon for 10 years. and it's just over a hundred clicks. But man it's been a steady stream of new parts. But I still love that car. It's like driving your living room down the street :)

But especially, on an expensive car, I'd never buy it (Except the Yukon). About 90% of the new luxury cars here are leased.

Be careful you have the right day when you drop your pants on the subway Steve.

I seldom ride the Subway or bus.

I've got about a 140 grand on my Durango. I've loved that thing, but I think its getting near its trade off time. Paid on if for 5, drove for no payments for another 5. Thinking I might be going back to a pickup again after it though.

I seldom ride the Subway or bus.

But on the days you do, you don't wear your pants?

This sounds like a world's most interesting man post.

This hardly compares, no man, but it's to get down to (+)25 & 26 F. here on Sunday & Monday nights. Many pipes will burst, blast man.

Bursting pipes are a big problem here to, and easily prevented. Open the doors to the cupboard under the kitchen sink if its on an outer wall and clean out the ####### so the heat can get to the wall. Also leave the water running at a slow trickle.

The proper (meaning Texan) term for any such beverage is Co-Coler, whether it's an actual Co-Coler or Pepsi or whatever, si man.

Sounds like the Philippines.

What would you like to drink?

I'll have a coke.

What kind?

Sprite

2) I feel jealous of your snow and temperatures... I miss snow and a real winter. They say that we will have a real winter will come in the second half of January, but I'm like #######? Winter should have been here for a month already!

The North Pole has fallen off the top of the world to Minnesota. We would be very appreciative if all Europeans collectively inhaled deeply all at once and pulled that North Pole air back your way a bit. Apparently too many politicians on your side of the world have been blowing too hard.

One positive note about minus 20 degree weather, no mosquitos have bothered me outside.

I was a little miffed yesterday when going out to the road to roll my trash can back, only to discover the trash company halted collections due to the cold. I don't quite understand this as the trash collectors don't even get out of their truck when collecting trash, its all down with an automated arm. Unless maybe the hydraulic systems don't work when it gets this cold.

It took three winters, but my spouse has finally decided to enjoy winter activities in Minnesota. BTW this was last Saturday, when the temperature was still above zero, although not by much.
