My kid says "I wanna ride the Canada" when referring to a carousel.

Ah that's cute. Mine just repeats horsey horsey until you get her on it. She calls her big brother's frog a beeleep not sure how she came up with that one, and the goldfish she calls them beeleep's nummies .

I think the adjustment is also a matter of what you expect and what actually happens at the end. Nobody can really "know" how things will be.

This is a perceptive comment, si ma'am. I searched unsuccessfully just now for the exact quote from a gringo who spent mucho time in Costa Rica & Panama. In brief, he said that even though he was acutely aware that he would experience homesickness and culture shock, he was not immune. He said that despite his awareness, there came times in both countries beyond the initial acclimation when he thought that he "had it all figured out" but realized that he really didn't. This is why I would hesitate to relocate to Ecu, even though I would have a complete support system in addition to my personal experiences on many visits. There are those two aspects to relocating: the initial shock, and the aftershock, quake man.

Ecuadorians notoriously celebrate absolutely everything - every city's independence, every city's patron saint, various different battle anniversaries, plus religious holidays... the list goes on.

Did Señor Part Cuatro throw coins off the front doorstep at midnight, eat 12 grapes, etc.? Mrs. T-B. did both. For the first time (and for her initial time as a [i[ciudadana Americana[/i]), she threw the coins onto the driveway and not into the lawn or bushes, where I'd hit them with the lawnmower or scratch my entire body trying to fish them out, respectively.

The throw-coining worked -- I became approximately $2.53 richer, whee man!

Even now I'm itching to go somewhere else.

Go back to Ecu and get bitten by some of their patented mosquitoes, and you'll be itching, ow man. Their bites last a full, agonizing month.

he was a gonna sit home by himself on New Year's Eve.

Gnu Year's Eve is Amateur Night, sigh man. The Ecu chicas stayed in (Mini-B. was asleep, so they were stuck anyway) while #1 Cheap Gringo husband & I went across the street to the neighbor's spare-no-expense party. Stayed to eat some quite-fine chow while hearing other drunken neighbors regaling us with grandiose concepts of their own concept of their grandiosity, chortle man.
