i know another dumb question,(can of worms) why do you still have these old messages

It's not a dumb question, it speaks directly to his sickness. Notice how he reveled in posting JP's old message, calling it a "gem" and that he was saving it for the right time to use it?

and it had the intended effect. it shows that i'm not the only one taking screenshots, eh?

suck on that

Do you care that your behavior (the screenshots) makes people feel unsafe and violated?

I give up...what does that mean?

It means (roughly) "Please go right ahead and do so."

Have you learned some basic polite Arabic terms yet for your trip to Egypt ? Even a few of them (please, thank you, etc.) will be much appreciated, and they go a long way in "breaking the ice" !

Well I know my prayers, I know to say assalam alaykum and walaykum salam, I know shokran and I know how to elbow Usama when I don't know anything else. lol. He's not planning on leaving me alone at all but I have the emergency arabic handbook and common egyptian phrasebook. I've tried to study it a bit but I keep getting sidetracked. Hopefully I can read some of it on the plane but the phrasebook that Rhama suggested is odd in that Usama didn't even understand some of the things I was saying, so I kind of figured why bother if no one will understand it.

eta: he just texted me and said it means "please come in".

alot of mud slinging (course im still in the look, listen stage) sabatoge, use against someone, spy, why? I came to this group because i felt there would be similar situations centering around Ahmed which comes from Morocco and i could (look, listen) and hopefully learn. If your not interested in Morocco why would u comment unless the issue was put in general terms to me (from any country) THe issue of Morocco men working, how can someone from (anyplace in general) have an opinion, if was said men in general, fair game. Wonder if that makes sense but sometimes the opinions are so far off because each is different. In a site like this where half are from another country about anything said can be taken wrong by somebody. Dont go to those people house (forum) and start saying them because i can guarantee .......

Best way to learn the arabic is to just get out there and use it. MK is right about how a few words will take you a long way. The Egyptians will be so appreciative.

Believe me... my happiness is in no way connected to you.

I am asking you a simple question. Do you care that your behavior makes people feel unsafe and violated?

I can take pictures of my neighbor coming and going. However, it would clearly be unsettling to them. Does ANY part of you care that taking screenshots of when Jenn came and go left her unsettled? While you may consider yourself sane and rational, can you not understand why that could be frightening to a woman?

Does ANY part of you care that despite the group being left open, that members feel violated that you took screenshots of what you KNEW they thought was private?

I think it would go a long way if you could simply answer these questions without the remarks.

I apologize profusely for my incompetance that let the yahoo group remain public. I could have sworn I had selected the private option :( Always double and trip check is the lesson I've learned.

A really great and accurate Egyptian phrasebook is the Lonely Planet Egyptian Arabic phrasebook. I had Mohamed go through it with me and he agrees that it's very accurate. There are a few words and phrases that are used over and over again in Egypt. Those would be good to learn. For instance if you want tea you would say..ana ayza chai or if you don't want something say..mesh ayza ***. To ask how someone is doing you would say..inta (for a man) or inty (for woman) amla ey? If someone asks you that you would respond..good=kuwesa or ok=tamam. If you want to ask a price for something you would say...bekam? Those are just a few. Oh and don't forget the ubiquitous holiday/eid greeting...kolsana wenty (a) (om) tayeb(a) (een) which means "every year and you are good/better".

Haha he didn't understand because the accent is different. Just keep trying -- don't give up. With a bit of practice, you'll be haggling in the market and bargaining your taxi fare just like an old hand. :P

Tfaddali is often a response to someone's request. So if someone knocks at your door, you say "tfaddali" -- "Please (come in)"; if they ask "Is this seat taken?" you say "tfaddali" - Please (sit down,) etc. etc. Or it can be used to offer something, like handing someone a cup a tea, or giving your passport to the desk at the hotel. It's a nice polite handy word to remember.

By the way, this is the feminine form. To a man, you would say "Tfaddal."

I can't wait to say "da gozee" :)

The two most useful phrases I knew were "I am sorry, I don't speak arabic" and "I don't understand."

Of course, I can't remember them now...but now that my paralegal classes are over, I'm starting in on arabic again! Huzzah!

I had the same experience. I took arabic in college for a semester and would attempt to practice with Tamer online. I got really frustrated when he didn't understand me.
