Hi M & M, thanks so much for this. I feel much better that there are Fil-Am groups in Columbus. Dave and I look forward to having new friends in the area soon...

To the other VJ members who replied, thanks a lot as always. I so appreciate it!

DandC,

Just saw this post, hope not too late. Not to worry, we are just west of Columbus north of Dayton and be assured there are plenty of Asian markets in the Coumbus/Dayton/Cincy region that are well stocked with many familiar items from Philippines. My asawa has been in US for over 6 years now and continues to be amazed as many items not accessible in Leyte province are readily available to her here. We just returned from Phils in April and did grab a few items that tend to be way overpriced here - many packets of Magic Sarap, PhCare, Knorr's Sauce in big bottle (like liter size). You'll find most of what you need locally, just search around a bit.

There are two Fil-Am groups based in Columbus - PASCO and I can't recall the other, and another in Dayton. We've many pals in the Columbus area, and have attended and hosted many, many giant gatherings, not so much though in the past year since the asawa is a working girl now. It's quite blustery (nasty cold, snowy, icky, winter, blah!!) now in the area, but spring and warmer weather will arrive soon. Be sure to visit the Asian Festival in Columbus over Memorial day weekend (end of May).

Good luck on your trip and welcome to Ohio!!

Oh stop acting like you know what a tabo is, Foo!! :)

Pancit Canton? Even here in the mountains of Tennessee you can get that, at asian markets for sure, and asian section at most grocery stores. But I prefer making it from scratch

Do tell, Brijo... How you dew that?

One in each bathroom. But the next house I buy, I will install one of those nice heated automatic ones for the master bath.

Magic Sarap is a flavor packet sold in the PI. Mostly MSG, plus some chicken broth I think.

When I run out this time, I think I will introduce her to Adobo MSG seasoning. Prolly cheaper here.

MSG makes me head for the CR after I consume it

Do what? Buy it from the grocery store or make it from scratch? To buy it at the grocery store just go to the grocery and go down the aisle with asian food and buy instant pancit canton. To make it from scratch just follow any recipe that sounds good to you, such as the following. But I have already saved a recipe for us in my recipe book. Just dont feel like typing it all out here. But here is one from online. But I like my wife's pancit canton the best. She keeps the recipe for it up in that beautiful head of hers, and a secret from me.

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, crushed

1 lb pork shoulder, sliced thinly

1 chicken breast, deboned and sliced thinly

1/2 lb shrimp, peeled

2 tablespoons soy sauce

2 cups chicken broth

1 cup cabbage, shredded

1 cup green beans, julienned

2 carrots, julienned

3/4 cup dried black mushrooms or 3/4 cup shiitake mushroom (optional)

1 (1 lb) package pancit noodles (Chinese wheat noodles)

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

patis, to taste (Filipino fish sauce) (optional)

4 green onions, sliced

1 lemons or 1 kalamansi, cut into wedges

Directions:

1

If using mushrooms, soak them in warm water for 30 minutes, then cut into strips, discarding the tough stems.

2

Set aside.

3

Heat oil over medium-high heat in wok or large skillet.

4

Saute garlic and onions until tender.

5

Add pork, chicken and shrimp, and cook until browned.

6

Add soy sauce, stirring to flavor.

7

Add chicken broth and bring to boil.

8

Add cabbage, green beans, carrots and mushrooms.

9

Cook until vegetables are tender, yet crisp, 5-8 minutes.

10

Add noodles, mixing gently to prevent them from breaking.

11

Cook until liquid is absorbed and noodles are done, about 10 minutes.

12

Remove from heat.

13

Season with black pepper and patis.

14

Garnish with green onions and lemon wedges.

Oh, lol... I thought you meant you made your own pancit noodles from scratch. Yeah, I know how to make Pancit Canton, but was wondering how hard it would be to make fresh noodles. I make my own pasta, so figured it couldn't be all THAT hard...

Hey, my wife wants to do that, make her own pasta... Do you use a press for that? She would love to do it herself.

WARNING: If you have celiac disease this product actually has GLUTEN as one of it's ingredients. My wife had been using it a lot here in Hawaii and I was having symptoms again. I could not read the frickin' microscopic print on the packet so my wife did and low and behold one of the actual additives is Gluten.

Are you sure about that? Here's what I see:

Ingredients: iodized salt, msg, sugar, chicken fat, flavour enhancer, garlic, onion, spices, natural and nature identical flavours. egg powder, meat powder. Made on equipment that also processes soya, wheat, fish, sesame, peanut.

I read online that MS used to be made with wheat gluten, but has since switched to bacterial fermentation. Maybe you have some older stuff?

Yes indeedy I do. Here's the one I got:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009U5OSO/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I really enjoy it. It is a little more work, but when you can take some dough, roll it, cut it, drop it into the water and have awesome noodles 2-3 minutes later... worth it. The first time I made some, my wife asked me why I was going to all the effort. Said it was just better to open a bag and boil the hard pasta. Then she tasted mine. Suffice it to say we have only bought pasta from the store while moving and our pasta maker is in storage...

DavenRoxy,

My wife just read the package to me over the phone.

Here are the ingredients exactly as listed on the packet of Maggi Brand-Magic Sarap: Iodized salt, monosodium glutamate, sugar, chicken fat, flavor enhancer, garlic, onion, spices, natural and nature identical flavor, (Gluten), egg powder and meat powder.

We brought this stuff back from Philippines in July of this year. I hope they have changed the formulation because then I could use it but the msg still might be harmful...who knows?

Aloha and
