WORK AND TRAVEL - Staying at a friend's house

Hello!

Next Monday I've got the interview at the Embassy because I'll be traveling to New York on the Work and Travel program.
I met this guy 3 years ago online and I'll be staying at his apt during my trip there (4 months).
What if the consular officer asks me where ill be staying?
Should I tell them the truth or should I make up something? If so, what should I say?

Why would you even consider lying to US immigration by making something up?

You didn't say (at least in this thread) what sort of a visa you are here on (student or tourist) and you didn't say why you are going to the Embassy for interview.

Are you in some other city in USA and now traveling to NY or are you in another country traveling to NY?

I thought we all agreed that having a boy/girl friend in USA would be a negative when applying for tourist/student visa to USA.

The Interviewing Officers at USA embassies abroad have standing/written orders to view everyone as a potential illegal immigrant with the burden on the applicant to prove otherwise.

Telling about a boy/girl friend in USA is certainly not the way to convey your intention to not immigrate.

So is lying. If she is staying with a BF then that is what she says. She brings strong ties to combat the presumption of immigration.

Actually, it is the LAW, not merely standing orders. Section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act requires them to approach all non-immigrant visas this way, except H1s. A girl/boyfriend is not a reason to deny a visa -- lying about it is.

Lying about anything and being caught will lead to visa denial.

Having a US boyfriend or girlfriend by itself is not automatic grounds for a denial. If the CO suspect that using the non-immigrant visa is a means to immigrate, then the CO will deny based on his discretion of potential fraud.

I never said anything about 'automatic.'

I also never said that people with US boy/girl friends have not been able to get tourist visa.

But it is still a cold hard fact that: Telling about boy/girlfriend in USA is also a reason used by IO's to deny visa.

People need to know the facts, know that there are risks, and then decide on their course of action.

The idea that a person from country X presented their application with info set A and got the visa; will be of little comfort to person from country Y who presents the same info set A . . . and gets a 3 minute denial interview.

trying too hard to avoid telling the truth will not only lead to a visa denial, but that same applicant will be branded as a liar (or its equivalent) in the COs computer....and that means that individual's credibility will have been ruined for a long long time....at least if one is honest about having a BF or GF, while that applicant may be denied, it won't carry the same stigma as someone who tries to pull the wool over the eyes of a CO...big long term difference...something to consider.
