Relocating

My fiance and I are currently waiting for Packet 4 from Montreal, and the waiting is making me crazy, so I'm starting to look ahead. Assuming all goes well and he gets the visa, we plan on moving to Washington (I'm currently located in California) sometime in 2014. Should we wait to file AOS until we complete the move? I know that he cannot work until his EAD/AOS is filed, so we want to do that as quickly as possible, but I also don't want an unnecessary headache if moving will cause that.

If it's easy to time the move before filing AOS, I would highly recommend it. I see too many reports here of USCIS getting the addresses wrong, sending important docs to invalid addresses and then you have the headache of tracking it down via phone representatives ... I wouldn't move during AOS unless you really have to.

Ideally, get him to California, and you have 90 days to marry. If you can move during that 90 days, perfect -- then just file for AOS from the new location. You should file for AOS around the time the 90 days is up, but if you wait an extra week or several, nothing awful will happen.

On the other hand, there are people who successfully move during AOS and USCIS sometimes gets it right. It's your choice and it's legal either way, but given the posts I've seen, I'd recommend filing AOS from the new address if it's only a short time after the 90 days are up.

If you do have to move during AOS, make sure you call them repeatedly and confirm that your address has been updated at least twice.

We plan on getting married when he comes to California, so that's no worry. I mean, I guess the worst case scenario is everything being sent to my mom's house instead of our new place, but I don't want to take chances. This will just be extra motivation to find an apartment quickly!
