Do I have to change my passport name?

I am the beneficiary and when we got married I included my husband's last name in the end of my name. We filled the I-130 based on my marriage certificate, which has my new name (with my husband's last name). Do I have to change my passport name? How will it work in the future when I will have to sign other forms and get into the US? I wonder if I need to get a new passport before the interview.

Thank you so much!

No, you do not have to change your name in your passport. My wife never did.

Better to book international travel in the name in the passport, however. Carrying a marriage certificate also is a good idea to match up the name on the green card to the name in the passport to satisfy the airlines.

This is a very useful topic for me. I have the same question as I am flying back to the UK in a few weeks and my passport is still in my maiden name but my green card is in my married name. I will take my marriage certificate when I travel. If anyone has any other advice on this, please do let us know! Thanks!

I wondered about this as well . My wife wants to change all her ID's , but can be a difficult and long process in some countries . I put in the question on our I-130 all other names used her name with my family name . This way she could sign with my family name and have it be known to USCIS that its a name she uses . This way if she does not have time to get all the changes done at least USCIS is aware of the name .

It is very good to note that the visa will come in passport name. The green card will come in visa name. If you want to change the name on the green card before you remove conditions then you must pay a $450 fee to do so.

Get a new passport with your married name so everything will be consistent, so the visa will be issued to your married name as well as your GC.

Hi, thanks for raising this question...its very relevant to me as well. It has been a question I've been rolling over in my head since I got married 2 months ago. I however, didnt want to change my passport yet since I will be travelling back and forth to my husband during the course of filing. I will however change my Driver's Licence among other national documents, since I will be in my country for a couple more months and will be required to operate in my new status as a married women.

However, since my I-130 application may take as long as 10 months (God forbid not longer), I'm wondering if it would be good to change my passport to my married name since the marriage would have been a couple months old. Any advice on that idea???

Thank you for the responses!

Another point is: Here, in my country, you don't need to change all your documents right after your wedding. However, when a document expires or when you need to make a new document, you HAVE to use your "married name".

For this reason, I thought that since the Green Card is a new document that was created after my wedding, I would have my "married name" on it, based on my marriage certificate.

Besides that, I will have to send to NVC photocopies of my passport biographic data page. In the meantime, I could get a new passport and this passport number will NOT match the old passport number. Would it be a problem?

Moreover, we have been filling all the forms with the "married name" based on the marriage certificate. How will it work if I have forms with a different name from the passport?

Of course, it would be better to have everything all set in order to simplify in the future, however, I don't want to jeopardize our immigration process.

The green card will ALWAYS be in the visa name which will be in the passport name.

If you got a new passport you simply bring both of them with you to the interview.

The forms should all have your maiden name on them as well as your married name (that's what "other names used" is for.)
