Hi guys. Short story: we got my fiancee her SS# in her maiden name no problem. After marriage she took certified marriage license to SS office to change her name to married and was refused. She was told to Adjust the status and come back with her Green Card to change the name on SS card. After reading some posts I understand that SS office clerk was wrong. Can you guys point me to their own official policy so I will go there with my wife and we change the name. we still have 20 days until K1 visa expires.

Thank you.

You may have trouble getting the SSA to do it with so little time left on her K-1. I would suggest you do as they recommend, for in the meantime she can use her SSN with her maiden name. The SSN will not change as a result of her name change, so she can continue to use it as always.

Well we tried it right after marriage with 40 days before K1 expiration. And I assumed they are right, until I started reading forums today.

There was a former SSA employee "I QUIT" and then he changed his VJ name to "I'M GONE". Here is an old thread about the name change problems. He weighs in on page 3. I am not sure why the SSA has such a problem with the name change. A USC only has to show a Marriage Certificate and the old SSC. Why can't it be that simple for LPR and others that receive a SSC from the SSA. They did verify that the person was eligible for the SSC, so what is so hard about using the Marriage Certificate with the old SSC as evidence to change the last name?

Good Luck with your battle,

Dave

must you change your name in order to adjust status? (I mean people in general, not just OP) smile.png

I don't think so. Lots of people keep their maiden names just to simplify things with documents. So I don't thing it is a requirement. We filed all of the AOS papers in my wifes married name. I hope we've done it right.

Nope. However, most people here in the US do have the woman change her last name to that of the husband's. My wife has kept her maiden name as both her name and my name are hard to pronounce, but hers is a bit easier and a lot easier for people to get the spelling right. I have a friend whose wife kept her last name for professional reasons. IMHO, keeping the last name is a better option than hyphenating it as I see that as trying to satisfy those that think you need to change your last name and those that think a woman should keep her maiden name.

I do feel that this is a personal choice and there are pros and cons to each choice.

Did you change the name in her passport before applying for AOS?
