GREELEY - The mother of a 3-year-old who accidentally shot himself in Frederick was charged Tuesday with criminally negligent child abuse resulting in death.

Dione Warren turned herself in on Monday evening.

Warren called the police to her home in the 500 block of Pine Street the morning of Oct. 28 and said she found her son, Sheine Steine, lying on the ground on the floor in her bedroom.

According to police, her son was unresponsive and bleeding from the head.

An autopsy showed that Steine had accidentally shot himself in the head with his stepfather's gun.

He found the gun between the mattress and frame of the bed after his mother left him home alone. She was taking her older daughter to school at the time.

Warren is due in court Tuesday at 1 p.m. for a bond hearing.

Her initial statement to police was that they needed a gun at home because they feared for their families safety. The same level of concern doesn't seem to be apparent when she left her 3 year old home all alone on a bed within reach of a loaded firearm. Poor little guy.

Police were not going to charge her at first. I'm getting kind of sick of this "they've suffered enough" ####### when something like this happens. They haven't suffered enough. Hopefully she can rot in jail for a while and serve as an example to other irresponsible gun owners.

Personally I think both parents should be charged. The Mother for leaving her 3 year alone, and the Step-father for not properly storing his weapon.Though I don't think we need anymore gun control laws, there are too many children dying because of the stupidity of adults. The parents and adults in these situations need to be held accountable with serious retributions.

I agree. They were looking more closely at the step father initially. Hopefully they continue with that. At some point it became apparent that the mother was not home at the time the accident occurred, a fact that she lied about.

I saw a commentary on the news that she is probably looking at a sentence of 6-8 years for criminally negligent child abuse resulting in death. There was a high profile child abuse death case here a few years ago where both parents got 16 years. It sometimes seems the law doesn't put much value on the life of a child.
