Do you and your fiance(e) have a large age difference?

Did you get any bad reactions from family or friends, or anyone else?

If so, what did you do, make a joke of it, insult them back, get mad, or what?

You still never answered the question....what is a "large age difference"?

I would say anything over a 15 year age difference is pushin' it.

10 years or plus?

There is an age gap (12 years) between my husband and myself.

I make (or made when I was working) more money than him. Neither of us were golddigging. :star: .

No one has really said much to us about the age difference, a nice friend made a comment once, but I forget what my response was.

It would depend on my mood and who made the comment when it came to "handling" any comments made about the age difference.

Well, if someone mentions it to you then I guess they think it's large. Any number I would pick would be subject to debate. I know people who think 10 years is a large difference, and others who think 20 isn't. IMO it's all relative and it has a lot to do with your overall health and lifestyle.

But the main question here is reactions from others to your age difference, and what your reaction was to that. If someone has a 30 year age difference and nobody has ever given them a reaction to it, then they can't have much to say about what they did about it, can they?

If the power dynamic between the two people isn't weird, age doesn't matter.

How often is it not weird between two people with a large age gap, though?

And that's weird by American mainstream feminist (or even post-feminist) standards.

I am almost two years older than my husband. Some of my friends have made the "robbing the cradle" joke. But it doesn't bother me because I'm pretty sure they're just joking around.

Apparently you're suggesting that a large age gap automatically means one person most likely has more "power" or is in control of the relationship. Doesn't this depend more on the personalities involved than the ages of the two people?

Ok....we probably do not "qualify" in the large age difference, but I am almost 8 years older. He will be 35 this month and I will turn 43 in February.

In my family this seems to be the norm. My mom was 7 years older than my step-father.....my sister is 7 or 8 years older than her boyfriend.....her daughter-in-law is 6 years older than my nephew......my other sister was 5 or 6 years older than her ex-husband....need I go on???

Not large age differences, but the women have all been older. It has become more a norm in this country, especially since my mom first hooked up with my step-father in 1980, but I know it is not the norm in India. However I am lucky - his family does not care, my family or friends do not care and more importantly - WE do not care! If anything, I joke about it more than anybody else.

The second anyone in a relationship tries to take power, is the start of the path to divorce.

I could see that if there were a struggle for power that might not be good for a relationship. But I've seen lots of couples with an inbalance of power. Many people seem to be perfectly content letting someone else take the reins.

I think I'm 6 1/2 yrs older than my SO but it's late and I'm tired. Not a biggie for me since I grew up in a very sheltered environment and he has been through a lot in his life so we're pretty much both at the same level of maturity. My sister is 15 yrs younger than her hubbie and that seems to work for them. I personally couldn't handle that but then again I'm not her and there's a screw for every nut. :)

12/28/06 - got married :)

Well relationships are tricky. I can see how there could be a "power issues" when there is a huge age gap. It'd depend on the relationship though.
