We got my wife's finger prints in November. They were not quite good but the officer still took them even though the machine said rejected. We got a letter saying FBI failed to use her finger prints and we need to do it again. We got a baby last year so my wife dose a lot of washing. We decided that she will try to avoid washing with bare hands as much as possible. But we are still worried that what if the second time she still has the same problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

You get two bites of the cherry with regards to capturing biometrics.

If she fails to have them captured correctly a second time then you will be RFE'd for police certificates from all jurisdictions in which she has lived in the US.

Thanks for your reply. What are the police certificates and how can we get them?

It varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Usually the local police or sheriff's department either provides them for a nominal fee (~$10 - 20) or directs you to the agency who issues them. They may be called "police certificates" or "good conduct certificates", again depending on the location. It's basically just a criminal records check in that area.

I am making a guess, but washing should not affect finger prints too much unless it is right before the prints are taken. We got an invitation to try again also. Paula has very small fingers; she wears a size 3 1/2 ring. I think it is just that the system cannot handle anything that is outside the norm.

And, if anyone has any suggestions about how to be succesfully fingerprinted, please post them.

I'm not sure if this will help as I figure most people probably tried this already anyways. But here goes...

I always seem to have a problem with finger printing because I've always been asked to redo at least once on the spot - either at CBC or at the ASC. The one thing I'm usually told by the officer in order to get the finger prints successfully recorded is to clean the fingers prior to printing (usually with hand wipes or the alcohol spray they have there - sometimes hand grease can get in the way) and press really really hard on the scanning machine. I'm short and although not that short (5'2"), the scanning machines are usually at a height that in order for me to really press hard I had to tip-toe.

I also have small fingers and since they usually take the prints by rolling one side of the finger to another I needed to press hard all the way. It's a bit of a workout! lol However, don't press too hard such that the scanner only gets a huge blob of a finger.

I'm probably pretty lucky each time because the officers will usually help with the printing and make sure a good image is taken - haven't had any issues with it (although got a stern response from one because I wasn't pressing hard enough).

Good luck!

ROC Journey:

4/24/13 - Submitted I-751 application

4/26/13 - I-751 officially filed

6/11/13 - Biometrics done

8/14/13 - Rec'd RFE

9/21/13 - Submitted RFE response

9/23/13 - RFE response rec'd at VSC

(about 2 months later)

11/21/13 - Service request via Tier 1 submitted

12/11/13 - Response to service request rec'd - vague info about processing times

12/12/13 - Service request via Tier 2 submitted

12/10/13 - APPROVED!!! (letter rec'd 12/14/13)

12/16/13 - 2nd Service request response rec'd

12/17/13 - Card production email/text rec'd (online case updated)!

12/24/13 - Notification rec'd via email regarding card mailed on 12/23/13 (online case updated as well)

12/26/13 - 10-yr card rec'd!

One thing I have learned on this journey:

There is no such thing as an "overkill" evidence package. Submit anything and everything you can. Who knows what will prevent you from getting an RFE.

I am pretty sure that's what has caused my problem too! I had my fingerprints done a month ago, and got the same notice. My second biometrics is tomorrow :(

Every other time I've had my fingerprints taken has been fine, but this time the lady taking them seemed to get very frustrated (without giving me any idea why, or if I was doing anything to cause it). But I do have very petite hands, and she was like a giant in comparison. She was incredibly rough, to the extent that it caused me a splitting pain between the tops of my fingers.

I came away complaining to my husband about how rough and frustrated the lady had been, but did not expect to need them taken again!

The only thing I have been able to think of trying is to keep my hands well moisturized in the days leading up to my appointment. My hands do seem to dry out a little in winter, so I'm just taking precautions.

I think that the most likely explanation in my case is that the person doing my fingerprints was the problem.... I guess I just need to hope it's not the same one tomorrow!!!

She didn't have this problem for AOS. But this time she did. The only thing we could think of was washing too much. The officer did use something to clean up her fingers but still there were rejected.

Another possibility is the responsiveness of the scanning machines. I've noticed they aren't the same all across the board. In my (limited) biometrics experiences, some machine respond pretty well whereas others are not. There are a combination of different things. You'd think they would've made sure the machines all act the same but I really doubt it.

I had this problem, also at ROC. I read somewhere on VJ Cornhusker's Lotion would help, so I picked some up at the local Walmart. I used it several times a day, and at night with gloves. Second time worked fine. I would go the the second appointment and try before I would run all over getting police clearances you might not need.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Can I know what kind of gloves? Thanks!
