Marijuana shops scrounging to make products child proof

DENVER Several owners of recreational marijuana businesses in Colorado say they are having a hard time finding vendors that make child-resistant packaging, which will be required when the stores open Jan. 1.

All retail pot products leaving shops from buds to brownies must be placed in opaque and child-resistant packaging. But Mike Elliott, director of the Medical Marijuana Industry Group, told The Denver Post that some businesses are having an incredibly difficult time finding the proper packaging.

Were all looking for ways to comply with this rule, and everyone is worried were not going to be able to, basically, he said.

State regulators arent sympathetic.

The packaging requirements were the subject of a high-profile debate, were approved Sept. 9 and took effect Oct. 15, said Julie Postlethwait, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division.

This is not a surprise that came and hit them over the heads, she said The main point here, the focus the industry tends to forget, is we exist in order to ensure public safety. You dont want a child ingesting high-potency infused products. The risk is a childs health.

It has been said that it does no harm .... according to past posts non this forum......why restrict it at all. A good pothead would and should make it a family event. Feed it to the kids like candy.... Make them brownies... Myself I don't use it or intend to use it. I believe it is dangerous ..... But if you don't think so well become the supplier to your children. Let them have a good buzz on before they do their homework.....You pot heads say it will expand their creativity..... Have at it.

You say it is not dangerous to use.... Why restrict it at all .....Let the kiddies have at it. I say there are problems using it ... You pot heads repeatedly say it does no harm at all......So now I am agreeing with you....feed it to your children.....Why the child proof packaging if it is so safe......If you don't think it is safe then require it locked away in a safe like you want all guns to be stored. If your children have access to it then you can be charged with child abuse and have the courts take your children away.... for good. Just like you have recommended for firearms in a home . That has been posted here on this forum also.

Since's you're clearly an absolutist, you may have trouble understanding. Advil should be kept out of the hands of children shouldn't it? So should mouth wash. Legalizing marijuana does not mean children should be able to use it. It just gives more people the right to make the choice to use it as an adult IF they want. I don't understand why tea party folks wouldn't be for this. Its a perfect example of less government restrictions. BTW, people can be for the legalization of Marijuana and not smoke it. People like me.

As far as the gun stuff goes, Marijuana does not fire potentially life threatening projectiles at other people.

Cough medicines, Flintstone vitamins and chewables are also "safe" in the proper dosages.. However, They require childproof packaging on these items as children who get a hold of it are not able to know what is a proper dosage is or amount that can be consumed... Same with items containing marajuana... Since children lack the ability to judge, the packaging is required.

Of course, when I was growing up, the home was a dangerous place anyways - exposed electrical sockets, large appliances precariously balanced on rickety stands, book cases unsecured to the walls, unlocked kitchen cabinets full of dangerous chemicals and drawers full of sharp knifes, cigarette lighters or match boxes everywhere.

Yet cough medicine and chewable vitamins are not categorized as "unsafe" ... They are perfectly safe in the correct dosages... I am not a user of marajuana but have seen it make a great difference in a family members life suffering from cancer... So i am very pro medical marajuana... However, it believe that there is a risk (just as with vitamins, cough syrup etc.. ) for misuse and therefore child resistant packaging is a positive move for medical marajuana.

How can children not use it Parents tote up in the living room with the kiddies 5 ft away. I'm saying, in the hands of a child, its as dangerous as mouthwash. Actually, probably not as dangerous. Considering drinking a bottle of mouthwash is probably more deadly than eating a bag of pot. Anyway, any kid that could figure out how to load a bowl and then use it properly is probably capable of opening a child proof Advil container and is likely not a child. What age are we talking about here? When I hear child proof, I think under the age of 9. Which is the group child proofing is aimed at in general.
