Yeah, single payer isn't possible to handle. That would require a system that can handle milions and million of beneficiaries. Something like Medicare. Oh wait...

If it's so great, I wonder why the number of doctors opting out of Medicare are at record levels?

No they wouldn't, not at the point of care anyway.

In magical world no. I agree with you in principle but I think profit is a motivating factor for SOME doctors. That doesn't mean I agree that medical care should be all about the Benjamins. BUT I'm not convinced that a single payer system (something I support) would not show an immediate decrease in med school applicants from some of our best and brightest. But, every option has its pitfalls.

I suppose it's about what people's expectations are in career terms. Does everyone have to aspire to be a millionaire?

The level of training involved - a doctor is always going to make more money than nearly every other profession.

If Medicare were a single payer, I doubt you'd have doctors opt out all that much. Besides, doctors routinely opt out of private health insurance plans all the same. Come January, the best cancer center around here will no longer be accessible to United Healthcare policyholders. They opted out of that private insurer. Now what?
