Obamacare enrollment and legal separation

Hi,

Currently I'm legally separated.

While married I was on my husband's healthcare plan.

The thing is even if he forgot to remove me from his health insurance, it'll still end when we are divorced, which should be a few weeks from now. And I need my own health insurance.

I'm looking into Omabacare but there're a few things I'm not clear about:

What is my household income? My husband makes around $90,000 annually. But being unemployed I make nothing. I get no support of any sort from my husband during or after the divorce. My friend has been helping me out since I got kicked out of the marital home. In a couple of months to come my income will still be zero because I'm just starting over again from scratch, learning to drive, getting a car, looking for a job, etc...

So I wonder how I'll enroll for Obamacare, which income to report, $90,000 or $0.00 (I tried filling in the "income field" with $0.00 but the number was rejected as invalid, so I really don't know what else to put in there). If I'm still on my husband's healthcare plan can I still enroll for Obamacare because the divorce is supposed to be granted later this month and if I wait it might be too late for the enrollment- I heard that by 2014 one must be medically ensured and the deadline for Obamacare enrollment is December 23, well, at least it's what I'm told.

Please help clear my confusion if you know about this.

For subsidy eligibility purposes, you have to estimate your 2014 household income. On December 31 2014 if you are not married, then you will be filing single for that year. His income won't matter. So if you think it'll be 0 and the system doesn't take 0, try 1 laughing.gif If you live in a state that expanded Medicaid, you will get Medicaid.

As for actually enrolling, December 23 is the deadline if you want to be covered by Jan 1 2014. The actual deadline to avoid a tax penalty is March 31 2014. If you enroll after December 23, you will have to wait a few weeks before your coverage kicks in.

If you are definitely getting the divorce finalized in a few weeks, just wait till then.

Phew! A huge burden off of my hunched back! I was so worried about the penalty if I didn't enroll by December 23.

Thank you so much mota bhai!

Thanks, this is useful info for my ex and me too. Our divorce is final in 6 weeks and we're trying to figure out what he should put down for his income.

There's a possibility he may sucker some lady into marriage before the end of 2014, but hey, then he'll be her problem!
