Surname

I am an American citizen. I went to Cuba in September and I married my husband a Cuban national. I went to go get my last name changed to his last name at social security yesterday. My husband has two surnames. Which surname should I take. My husband would rather I use his second surname which is his mothers. The woman at social secuirty told me I should either use both surnames or take his fathers surname because that is the legal surname that will be recognized when he does his immigration papers. I walked over to the immigration office and that woman also suggested I take both of my husbands surnames. She told me he could change his name and take only hus mothers surname after he does his nationalization papers. Is anyone out there familiar with this type of thing? I just want to make sure there is no confusion later and that I have the name that will be best for when we file the CR1 documents.

which order is it?

firstname middlename surname1 surname2 ? or FN MN SN2 SN1?

They are right. You at this point have to use what is his current legal name. Later on in the process he will have the option to use the name of preferance and/or drop the name(s) altogether as he choses. I believe what the Immigration officer refers to the N-400 Application for Naturalization. Part 1 D1. Would you like to legally change your name? Yes or No. If Yes: Print new name....

That section of the form will allow the resident that is applying for citizenship the opportunity to change/modify their legal name.

I just took my husband's fathers name. I did not want to have two last names and it worked out fine. Typically you would take his father's last name but legally you can take the mother's. It shouldn't be an issue with immigration as the marriage certificate and evidence of a bona fide relationship are MUCH more important. It is going to be your name and this is the easiest time to change it. I would make it what you want it to be for the rest of your life.
