Stopping in Taiwan and Hawaii before final destination?

My wife will soon have her CR1 visa and will come live with me in California. She has relatives in Hawaii that she's considering visiting on the way.

The planned route is:

Manila -> Taipei -> Honolulu (for a few days) -> San Diego

Taipei will just be a stop over, unless there is some problem with the flight we have to prepare if she has to stay overnight in a hotel. I see that Filipinos can stay in Tawain for up to 30 days if they have a US visa, so I assume if she had to stay overnight it would be okay.

Then she will spend a few days in Hawaii with her relatives before hoping on a plane to meet me in California.

Will any of this present any problems with her CR1 visa? Would it raise any red flags when she goes through customs?

I don't think a stopover in Taiwan will cause any issue. Her US POE will be Hawaii. Once she clears immigration and customs there, she will be on US soil. No more inspections!! Good luck and congratulations!! Looks like it's going to be a GREAT Christmas for you 2!!!!

Your wife will go through immigration and customs in Honolulu, not California. Once in the USA she can travel wherever she chooses. (Hawaii is a state ... laughing.gif )

Congrats!

Congrats to you and your wife! By the way, she can travel direct to Honolulu, HI without going through Taipei. That's what I did and I flew visa Philippine airlines. It's only about 9.5 hours travel. That would lessen her waiting and traveling time, and possible expenses that may incur should she stop by Taipei. smile.png

Think maybe she's traveling on Hawaiian Air? That's what we did. If so when she checks in at Manila, make sure the only check her bags in to Hawaii. They'll only give her boarding passes to Taiwan, once there she needs to go to the transfer desk to get her boarding passes to Hawaii. The gates that we used were pretty close together.

One thing I just thought of is the baggage, if she's taking China Air from Manila to Taiwan, the baggage limits are 2 checked bags at 50lbs each, for the Taiwan to Hawaii leg its 2 checked bags at 70lbs, for the Hawaii to California leg you might have to pay for any checked luggage.

Great information, thank you. And good guess - we're looking at Hawaiian Air for Taiwan to Hawaii and maybe Cebu Pacific for Manila to Taiwan.

No matter how the bags are checked they will have to be claimed in Honolulu to clear customs so she will be just fine as long as she keeps them with her after that. ;)
