That may be the essence of your argument, I see it a bit differently.

1. A political figure who is not very bright and has a record of saying stupid things. I really didn't think there was any underlying motives to Palin's comparison, just a silly one, typical of her.

2. A news pundit who numerous times refers to Palin as an idiot and rather than making a logical and reasonable argument to her comments, he decides to take one of the most disgusting things that a person could do to another, whether it be from slavery or any other walk of life, and publicly advocate that this be done to Palin. Who's the real idiot?

No, he did not advocate that it should be done, he said that if anyone deserved such a fate it was her. Are people really so ignorant they can't tell the difference between the one and the other? I find that appalling and strikes right at the heart of American education. It sucks if that's what most people take from this.
