I-94 Admission Number problem

Hi everyone,

Today my husband and I went to the DMV in California to get him a driver's permit.

We brought his passport with his immigrant visa in it, as well as his social security number and proof of address. We did not yet receive the printed green card but there is a CR-1 stamp signed in his passport next to the visa with the date of arrival.

When we got to the counter, she told us that we needed to bring a I-94 form. Is that true? Because when I went to fill out the I-94, in class of admission, there is no CR-1 option.

Any experience or help would be very appreciated!

CR-1s don't get I-94s because they become permanent residents upon entry. DMV was dumb.

Well, I guess we'll have to go back tomorrow.

Do I need the green card to go to the DMV or can I just bring the passport stamp. It does say it's a spousal visa but she didn't seem to care much.

I am not sure for CA DMV rules, so I can't say. But, your husband is a Greencard holder/Legal Permanent Resident now. I would banish all forms of "spousal visa holder" when talking to the DMV, because my suspicion is if you said "visa" the worker thought "needs I-94."

Your husband doesn't have a visa anymore. He is a Permanent Resident, with something to prove it (his endorsed/stamped visa).

Ca should have DMV rules online so you can see if the endorsed visa is good enough for them. Good luck.

I have the immigrant visa that was glued to his passport which says "Upon endorsement, serves as temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year"

then on the page in front he has a "Admitted LAX stamp" with the date and with "CR-1 11 Nov 2015" handwritten next to it.

Is that what you mean by stamp?

In WA State we faced the same issue because the endorsed visa serves the purpose of I-551 but not considered Stand Alone document as actual Permanent Resident Card does. They can ask to bring more proofs but can not deny. Take your Marriage Certificate, Previous Driver License or whatever available on his name. Good Luck!

Yep, that's the same as mine - except mine is for SFO and dated to July 2015.
