FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said a veteran police officer was shot at by Bulldog gang members at Cedar and Butler Avenues around 9 p.m. Monday. As the officer was under fire Dyer said he returned fire and shot three of four suspects.

When you consider the fact there were multiple suspects in that vehicle they were behind him, he was fired upon and made the decision to return fire and struck three suspects, I'll tell you what he is a hero and we are very blessed that we don't have a dead police officer tonight," Dyer said. The Fresno Police Department later corrected Chief Dyer's statement to say two suspects were hit in the gunfire.

Dyer said the officer's car was struck at least six times. He said the off-duty officer was heading to work at the Southeast Police District office just one block away from where the shooting occurred.

In your fairyland vision of the world. It would be nice if gunpowder had never been invented. The real world situation is this ... You cannot stop drugs from entering this country.....So you cannot stop guns . Take all the guns away and these same gang bangers will still be armed. Trafficking is trafficking.....What ever makes the bad guys money.....Guns,drugs,women, children. Drugs enter ,Guns enter... pure reality. Have a little machine shop you can make your own. Over in Pakistan people have made guns with just the basic of hand tools. They have been successful at it for over a hundred years.

Yeah, I'm under no illusion that these guys exist. I just think that more available guns equal higher probability of them ending up in bad guys hands. If there was a way for us to make guns to where they won't work unless in the hands of the authorized purchaser, I guess I wouldn't care as much. But I don't know of a way that exists.

Rather than wish for less guns in this society. Look at the question of Moral decay in out society.What causes a person ..A child... to kill an elderly person for the thrill of it. ... Kill over a pair of sneakers .... rob someone to get a cellphone. No structure,remorse, No ethics. You have 50 kids gather in a store to rob it in a 5 minute crime spree. Is it the lack of a religious structure.... Any religious structure. telling them right from wrong.....Buddhist,christian Muslim, Hindu ... Pound right from wrong at an early age into their head.. This is not being done.

How about a brutalising society where people are encouraged to fend for themselves rather than encourage civic virtues?

When people say things like "why should I have to pay for someone else's healthcare" or suggest that unemployed people are worthless it contributes to the idea that failure is deserved. Couple that with a few generations of impoverished, broken families and you might just get your head around the causes of some of these things.

I know it will never exist. I'm not living in the world of absolutes. Just because we'll never live in a world completely void of gun crime does not mean everyone in the world needs to be armed. All of this happened during the height of religious institution control and in many cases by said religious institutions. The cause is mute. Death is death. What's the difference in a person being fed to a lion for being christian or a gang member killing someone for being in a different gang?

Besides, I don't buy the moral decay, murder rates are going down which would suggest the opposite of your fear mongering. Why do i care about guns since its going down anyway? Well, I don't think its going down fast enough. Its natural and expected for an aging generation to think the next generation is morally lost. Your parents generation said the same thing about your generation.Especially since the murder rate was at its highest during the coming of age of the baby boomer generation.

Spooks, the solution coming from the right is just this. The reason people die from guns is because they themselves did not have a gun. There are two solutions being proposed to curb gun violence at their most basic principles. More guns or less guns. I think less is more construction.
