Thanks to everybody here for all the great help.

I'm a US citizen and my husband is Japanese. I'm sponsoring his green card and preparing 130 and 485 forms. But they both say they require his birth certificate copies. He doesn't have a hard copy and the Japanese government does not mail them out. One would have to go to Japan to get the hard copy, and my husband is here in the US.

How do Japanese applicants generally deal with the birth certificate issue?

He needs to get his Koseki and translate it. He can self certify the translation.

He may need do use a service to get it from his home in Japan.
