Hi,

I'm a US citizen living and working in Moscow. My girlfriend is Russian, 36, works as a freelance photographer, has some real estate in Moscow as well as a daughter from a previous marriage (her daughter would not be traveling).

I would like her to apply for a B-2 visa so that she can come with me to the States for a couple of weeks. What should she do to maximise her chances of getting a visa? Should I write a letter to support that she could bring to the consulate? Any gotchas I should be aware of?

I just want to make sure she comes with me next time I'm stateside for the holidays.

Thanks in advance!

She would be given B2 Visa since she has proof that she would surely return back to Moscow i.e her real Estate. Also you need to follow instructions

carefully while applying for the visa.

Thanks. One more question - sShould I mention that I'm her BF and I will guarantee her expenses while in the US? Or is it better for her to apply for the visa independently?

Thanks!

It is better if she gets the visa on her own merits. Having you jump in and vouch for her and try to "sponsor" her will usually backfire.

Agreed

Boyfriend sponsor might send the wrong message as they are afraid that she will decide to make "boyfriend" a "husband" and immigrate... Let her try on her own merits and have her take her proof of ties and need to return (daughter school enroll, property, job contracts (since she is photographer) whatever can convince them that she will return...

You cannot 'make sure' that she gets to travel with you to the US next time...she has to convince the CO that she will return...not an easy thing to accomplish in Russia, given the number of Russian women who wander off into the sunset with a tourist visa. Sounds like she also has a portable skill (free lance photographer covers a lot of ground), which is also to say that she has no consistent employer, other than herself. Her daughter does not represent a significant tie to Russia...people go the US, promptly fall in love, marry, then have the new US spouse file immigrant visa petitions for the new bridge along with any step-children. I would not be surprised if she is denied.

As soon as my girlfriend said she was going to meet her boyfriends parents it was an immediate denial on the B2. Don't have her mention you at all, she'll stay in a hotel for the time she is visiting or something else. As soon as they hear boyfriend they automatically think you will marry on that visitors visa.

If she is asked where she is staying or if she is visiting her boyfriend, which more than likely she will be, she should answer truthfully. It's never a good thing to lie to immigration officials.

Claiming she will stay in a hotel will bring yet another question...who is paying for that? Between airfare, hotel, etc, a VO will wonder why she wants to spend so much money to go 'sightseeing'....of course, a seasoned VO will rapidly figure out the real story....then what?

There is no way she should be encouraged to misrepresent the truth. If you are, in fact, planning to stay in a hotel, fine -- that's what she should say. If not, she should be honest about where she will stay. And, if asked why she is planning to go to wherever it is she will be going, it is highly unlikely that the consular officer will accept a simple "I want to visit there" without further information -- they know that (after all, you're applying for a visitor's visa). Any attempt to say something other that the facts, unless your girlfriend is a VERY good liar, will likely result in a denial as your girlfriend will appear nervous or like she is concealing something. Having a US boyfriend is not a reason to deny the visa; trying to conceal information is.

It's absolutely the reason that was given. They even advised to get a fiance visa even though we didn't have marriage on our mind, and we would be coming back to work in Israel. Both of us were on work visa's for Israel. Considering Las Vegas is an International tourist hot spot it's not uncommon to hear people say they want to visit and explore. Back on topic though. Every immigration adviser will tell her to not mention boyfriend in US.
