Husband has CR1 Visa...What does he need to start working?

Hello,

My husband just arrived to the states on Weds, Nov 27th. He is ready to start working right away. Will his visa be sufficient since he is here on a CR1 visa or does he have to wait to apply for jobs and work until he receives his SS Card/Greencard? I'm a little confused on what comes next and I know he doesn't want to sit at home long.

Thank you in advance for your help!

He needs SSN and endorsed visa (which acts as a temporary GC).

Congratulations.

The visa stamp in his passport qualifies as a temporary green card so he can work right away.

The only issue is that most employers would want to see a social security card, at least big companies with HR departments. If he is working for a small company with a copy of the SSN application or a receipt they should be able to allow him to work.

Personally I would at least start applying. The qualification for work is a valid CR1 and he has that.

The everify thing is a big deal but I am sure that there are ways for a manual process.

Good luck.

Congratulation, He will need his SS# card, and he will need Green card as well. Since he doesn't have the green card yet, he can use the temporany I751 stamp on his passport, as proof.

CBP is no longer placing special I-551 stamps in CR-1 visa holders' passports. Instead they are placing standard entry stamps on the page next to the visa itself and it's a combination of the visa and entry stamp that allows the visa to act as a temporary green card.
