Hey guys. I have looked around on this site a bit and haven't seen many people talking about hiring "consultants" or attorneys to help them file for family based Visas. Is there a thread or section where people detail those experiences?

Regardless, I would like your opinion:

My fiance lives in Brazil and I am in the US. We plan to get married in January 2014 and then immediately file for the CR-1 visa so she can move here to the US and work. I feel like we have a very solid case with no potential problems. She works for a US company, has already received a masters degree from the US and we also have documented proof of us dating for two years.

Does anyone think we should hire a "consultant"? We have a lot of things to do planning a wedding and we also need to deal with filing for my visa in Brazil. We thought it may be nice to have someone help guide us. We have explored the options and the attorneys want $2,000-4,000 which we are not willing to pay. We found www.k1k3visas.com and they are willing to do a lot of the work and guide us through the entire thing for $525.

Thoughs on this anyone???

Thanks and best of luck to you all!

If you have no weird circumstances (like previous US bans or convictions or something) then you don't need a lawyer - you'll just be paying someone to fill out forms for you. You can just follow the guides on here and do it all yourself if you feel confident that you can follow instructions.

This is the misconception people have with lawyers and consultants that they do all the work. You still have to dig through your emails, IM's texting, Skyping, letters (unless you are going to give them access to it). Of course no lawyer will do that kind of work. They don't read what you submit and suggest leave this and that out.

You have to gather everything and as the previous poster said they just fill out the forms with the information you gave them and clip and staple things together and mail off. And charge you bundles with no guarantee for success (although some say they do ) HA!!

Lawyers DO NOT ever call USCIS or NVC if there is an issue EVER!! They wait for email/snail mail for everything and that can delay you weeks if not months when you could have gotten the info with just a call in minutes.

I know everyone wants to do it the right way. I would do my due diligence and read through the forums what others have successfulky submitted review your country see if theres any special thing to know (every embassy truely is different and wants different things).

You will feel better knowing you are in the drivers seat and you can always come back and ask anything you like. We are here to help (hey you need that extra money for a wedding and honeymoon right ). goofy.gif

I think $2,000-$4000 is too much. My husband hired a lawyer with about $420 for everything.

However, I do agree with those who said that majority of what should be done for I130 Petition will still be done by you and your spouse. But if you have enough finances or if you think the fee is not really that big, I see no problem with hiring a lawyer.

Reason why my husband and I hired one is to have someone to atleast have our documents checked and if everything is done accordingly. Another thing is we both are busy with work and can no longer concentrate that much with the petition. Having a lawyer for us, to make it brief, is just to help us feel we are backed up and supported in case anything happens and for us to avoid any mistake we might do and might slow down the process instead.

It's still up to you really. By the way, if you decide to hire a lawyer, do a background check, previous client feedback, etch.,etch., This is what you will obviously do ofcourse, I just thought I needed to remind. :)

I'm in the same situation as you... Lawyers wanted $3K - $5K for their paralegals to fill out the forms.

My answer to you is.. NO

(I filed for the IR-1 in July and am still waiting. Lawyers can't do anything to speed anything up)

If she is your fiance, bring her on a K-1 visa and get married here and adjust status. It is faster than the CR-1 / IR-1 route.

Look at the guides in this forum and it will be easy as cake. Trust me :-)
