What is the advantage of getting SSN before marriage? Is it more difficult to get social security card after being married and before filing for AOS?

I've read few posts here in VJ that its better to get social security number on your maiden name then go back to SSA after being married and have your name change? How true is this?

More difficult after marriage? Welllllll the best answer is "depends"...

Depends on how intelligent the person behind the counter is. Get a Forrest Gump graduate and you have to be able to educate him or cave to his limited knowledge base. Get someone with a brain and it's no issue at all getting the SSN once married.

SS-5 states you need a valid I-94 to get an SSN. Then SSA states to change your name once married you need a certified copy of the marriage certificate. Should be pretty simple right?

My wife had ZERO issue getting her SSN in her married name.

Best approach if you get the Forrest Gump type is to slowly run through the procedure, have him confirm that a person can get an SSN with the I-94, then ask him what a person needs to change their name on their SS card once married? If he says marriage certificate... you go Ahhhhh Haaaaa!! And hope he sees the light idea9dv.gif

Can't work without the EAD or GC. Spending money on an EAD before marriage is a serious waste of money as it will expire when the I-94 does.

Reality is - can't work for 3-6 months after marriage if you file for the EAD, could be longer if you only file for the GC.

(EAD and AP are free to file with the I-485 during AOS.)

Thanks Hank as always...

A fellow VJ'r happened to ask me if I have gotten my SSN yet since I have been in the US for than 2 weeks now. And my responce to her is I'll get it after being married but she said that I should do it before marriage so that confuses me. I'm glad Hank is here wink.pngwink.pngwink.png

Its just a matter of timing really.

We went to the SSA office after we married and had sent the AOS/EAD/AP package, but 2 weeks before the I94 expiration. We went a second time to the SSA office after receiving the GC to remove "Valid for work only" on the SSN card.
