He'll need to be covered by March 31 to avoid a penalty for 2014. You have until December 23 to purchase coverage that would begin January 1.

I am the beneficiary and I am still not in the U.S. My hubby keep on telling me once I am in the states he will put me under his company health insurance. Is that possible? and is it possible to have me registered under OBAMAcare though we are still on NVC stage?

So my fiance who is from England and I are filling for immigration next week. I was wondering if once he becomes immigrated and get his green card if hes required to have health insurance just like everyone else here? Or if thats just for US citizens.

Wow, OP just asked a simple question. I reread it a few times. i am in the middle of the process and quite thankful this came up as i was wondering how it worked for me, accessing health care. Living abroad, i don't know so I am sure others dont either. No need to jump on her. It doesn't seem she doesn't want to put her fiance on Healthcare, was a general question. Sorry OP for all the negative remarks. Smh.

I don't know if it's possible for a non-US citizen living abroad to be covered on a health insurance plan in the US, but if you want to find out you should have your husband check with his carrier to see if they permit it. What I can tell you with certainty is that you don't need to have health insurance in the US prior to moving here. After you immigrate, your husband can definitely add you to his policy as a spouse and you'll be all set.

There are many more questions than answers.

Under Obabmacare a new resident needs to have approved cover.

Now that might be under a spouses Employer arranged policy. It seems many are cutting back cover for family members even if uou have access to Employer coverage.

A Fiancee is usually not eligible for Employer cover so most people would be looking at the Exchange.

Most new immigrants will not have a job. With the expansion of Medicaid many people might then be looking at Medicaid which provides much better cover than the majority of plans on the Exchange.

But we then have the I 864, and that seems to prevent access to Medicaid, so you would end up buying cover through the Exchange.

Affordable Health Care Act. what a pig wash.

Are you ready,

$ 500.00 / month premium

$ 12,000 / year deductible

So I I have a freaking cold / I pay $ 18,000.00 out of pocket before the insurance pays it. Affordable???

For sale : Ocean Front property in Arizona ( Any takers)

I swear this is the only damn country where it PAYS to be poor.

If your illiterate and poor, don't worry, I get to pay for your your f(*king insurance.

Sorry I could not resist.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist either, your digits are simply not correct and your post is just one more example of how many people have no clue about new healthcare law and insurance in general.

So, please tell me: what insurance plan is $500 a month with $12,000 deductible? Also, "deductible" doesn't mean you have to pay that amount before benefits kick in. I'm in CA, but I looked up TX marketplace plans and there is no such thing - not in TX, not in US through government marketplace (I assumed you're less than 35). In contrary, there is a plan for half that cost, with $0 deductible. It's interesting how people think that insurance is a luxury option, but new cars, fancy clothes, vacations, etc. are not. Another question: why doesn't your employer cover your insurance? That's (for me) much bigger problem than your ranting about illiterate and poor. Be wise - things happen, unfortunate situations happen. If you are lucky and not dependent on government or somebody's help, some people are not (many because of the old insurance laws). Instead, we help people who are less fortunate. And, that's so American.

BTW, hello everyone, greetings from Los Angeles :) Thank you everyone for a huge help with tracking timelines! However, there is a lot of misinformation around, so everyone be cautious, smart and safe :)

Age and Smoking are the main variables, location also has an impact.

I am older and premiums varied for one person between $400 and $1200 a month. If you are even older or a smoker it would be more.

The only zero deductible cover I know of is Medicaid, even the most expensive policy had deductibles.

Hi Corvusheart,

recently read this, maybe there are some pointers there?

Not sure if that is just stupid or spammy?

You've actually just jogged my memory, the office admin at my company suggested I add my spouse to my policy during our next open enrollment period (which will be February) even though we'll still be going through the visa process. I guess it's not such an uncommon thing after all!

That sounds about right. We did ours as soon as we were married, because a change of life status had to be done within 30 days of that event, else we had to wait until the next enrolment window opened (sometime in the new year). I updated my SSN with his HR as soon as we got it, too (your HR will no doubt want the same info as soon as it's available).

Note that the November enrollment period for next year is for health insurance policies on the exchange, not private employer-sponsored plans.
