I never really understood the dislike of fruitcake....

My grandma always made fruitcake and it was sooo yummy

I guess people are referring to those hard lumps they pass off as fruit cake in the store... :P

Fruitcake Lovers Unite!

By Molly McCall

Mon, December 18, 2006, 2:18 am PST

Laugh now, but the fruitcake will have its day. Go ahead, search on fruitcake jokes, humor, skits, and that cakeforsaken "fruitcake toss." But beware. The dense holiday concoction of dried raisins and candied currants will rise again. And the out-of-touch, fruit-mocking lobby will be shown for the fraud that it is.

Rumblings of resurgence have already started, and they're led by the patron saint of the holiday dish: the Fruitcake Lady. Over the past month, buzz on "fruitcake lady videos" (+1,841%) and "ask the fruitcake lady" (+830%) have logged spikes that reveal the liquor-saturated dessert's swell of support. Let Johnny Carson (cake rest his soul) and Jay Leno crack wise, but the fruitcake will prevail.

As further evidence of how mighty fruitcake nation is, we offer this list of the top cakes sought out online. In the privacy of their homes, aunties, grandmas, and funny uncles turn to the Web for foil-wrapped, heavily-spiced consolation. Fruitcake eaters of the world: Stand up and show yourselves! Be loud, be proud, and serve fruitcake.

I love a nice UK Christmas Pudding (with cream or brandy butter! Mmnnnn), or some shortcrust mince pies. But fruitcake.....ick. I hate it. Don't really know why, but I think it was the candied peel. The bits of lemon/orange peel? They'd make me feel ill when I felt them in my mouth.

*shudders*

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I agree, store bought fruitcake is more suitable as a door stop. I once tried a homemade version, which was quite excellent. Sadly, I did not get the recipe.

MarilynP - Are you willing to share the recipe?

I don't have the recipe but maybe I should see if I can get it from my Grandma..... too late to make it this year but maybe I can make some next year....

trust me I wouldn't be a fan of fruit cake either if my only experience of fruit cake was with those store bought ones :P

There's really only one fruit-cake....it just keeps getting re-gifted. It was originally brought by the little-known Fourth Wiseman, who was sent home in shame when his gift was rejected :P

I've never even seen a fruit cake in the store! Nobody has ever given me one and I've never even seen--let alone tasted--fruitcake. Is it a lack in Minnesota or something?
