Hi all VJ members! Thanks for all the information and advice that it helped me to process my K1 visa. I'm already here in US and I got married 1 week ago. We are not too sure, what will be the next step that I need to do to be able to stay with my husband here in US. Do I have to apply for my security number first or do I need to apply for adjust of status. I will appreciate if you can share to me the process that I required to do. Thanks a lot and hope to hear an answer from you , god bless you!

Not true -- the poster is a K-1, and can get a social security number nearly immediately after arrival in the USA, before filing adjustment of status. You do have to get the SSN within the first 76 days -- once you're at 2 weeks before the I-94 expires, you can't get the SSN until after the EAD arrives.

K-1s can get a Social before getting married.

And after marriage as well. The K-1 status allows a social security number anytime in the first 76 days after entry to the USA, whether married yet or not.

To the original poster: if you've already gotten married, you should go to the Social Security Office and get a SSN as soon as possible. They may hassle you a little about the marriage, but it's clearly stated that you're allowed a SSN. Don't wait until close to the expiration of your 90-day limit -- go as soon as you can. Take the electronic printout of your I-94 for verification, as well as your passport and your marriage license, also birth certificate would be useful.

Then when you're ready, file for AOS using the guides here on VJ. File for EAD (work permit) and AP (travel authorization) at the same time, since your green card could take up to a year to get. The EAD and AP should come around 2 months after filing.

Relationship since April 2006

K-1 Visa: I-129F filed November 6, 2012, NOA2 May 17, 2013, Interview and Approval July 24, 2013

POE San Diego, September 13, 2013, Wedding October 25, 2013

AOS filed November 19, 2013, EAD/AP received January 30, 2014, interview and AOS Approval on February 27, 2014.

ROC filed December 3, 2015, NOA1 12/4/15, Biometrics 12/31/15, ROC Approval on June 16, 2016, 10-Year Green Card received June 22, 2016.

N400 filed September 14, 2023, same day acceptance and Biometric Reuse notice, Interview on 2/13/24: Passed and same day oath. ALL DONE WITH USCIS.

No RFE at any stage, thanks to VisaJourney!

The above poster is wrong. You do not have to wait for your green card to get an SSN. Get the SSN now. As long as there is at least 2 weeks left on the I-94. http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn If you do not have enough time left on the I-94, then you get the SSN after you receive your EAD, which you will file for at the same time as AOS.

You can file for AOS as soon as you have all the required documents such as a copy of your certified marriage certificate that you get from the court after your marriage is registered. http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

~ Moved from K-1 Process to AOS from Family Based Visas - topic is AOS, not K-1 ~
