If you are more likely to sit next to that person at a movie than you are to have unprotected sex with them 400 times, then they are more of a risk to you if their disease is flu. :)

People can recover from the flu. Don't be silly, now

By the way an immigrant with the flue is much more of a health risk than an HIV infected person. I don;t see US POE officials checking for the flu at entry.

The flu is more dangerous than HIV? Hokay then

Ever heard of a flu epidemic? Lots of people don't recover. Who is being silly now?

People can beat the flu. Once you have HIV you have it forever. Bedrest and chicken soup aint makin it better.

I realize you're trying to defend a point, but comparing the flu as being more dangerous than HIV is simply laughable imo.

The comparison to the flu and HIV is just pure nonsense.

It is indeed.

She stated that the flu is more of a health risk than HIV. When determing risk, you must look at both frequency and severity. You are comparing strictly from a severity standpoint rather tham looking at the whole picture.

Apples and Oranges. Simple as that. Or did you get your HIV shot yet?

It's also about ignorance of what being HIV positive means.

It seemed pretty obvious to me that she was trying to say it's much easier to catch the flu from someone than HIV...am I the only one who read that for what it actually said?

Are you sure the flu shot is going to protect you from anything? I know how to protect myself from HIV>

It's not apples and oranges. You can quantify the risk of transmitting the diseases as well as how serious the disease is itself.

But, nevermind. I think the point was lost. She's not saying she'd rather have AIDS than the flu, or that the the chance of dying from the flu is greater than dying from AIDS if you have it.

It seemed pretty obvious to me that she was trying to say it's much easier to catch the flu from someone than HIV...am I the only one who read that for what it actually said?

I understood it that way too. It's just trying to be twisted to make it look like she said something different. Or maybe people are just incapable of understanding it at that level.

You may disagree about the immigration aspects of admitting people with the flu vs. HIV, but you can't say that you can't compare the two as health risks.

It will protect me from the most common strains of the flu and/or lessen the severity of the flu should I catch it anyway. Is it the ultimate safeguard against the flu? Of course not. However, people have been known to recover well from the flu. I am not aware of a single recovery from HIV.

You folks think of HIV in terms of HIV in the US or Western Europe. Head on out into the real hotbed of HIV where sometimes upwards of 20% of the population is HIV positive. Look at how the opportunities of getting infected increase as the portion of the population that is HIV positives increases. It's utterly ridiculous. If we can help it, I don't see why we would import this virus that we positively cannot battle.

Besides, Gupt made a rather valid point right at the start: Why load this heavy burden onto our already strained healthcare system? Don't tell me that only those that can show insurance coverage can get the waiver. That's naive thinking if you're at all familiar with the US health care system. Insurance companies drop their heavy loads left, right and center each and every day. First chance an insurer has to unload an HIV positive person, they'll do it. And you guys know it, too. Then where do those bills go? Against your and my tax dollar. That's where.

Sorry but I don't see why we need to consider HIV positive immigrants.

I keep my nail technician license current, and with every renewal, you have to take an HIV awareness course. It teaches what HIV does to the body, how it affects the cells, the progression of the illness in scientific terms. Mind you, it's only a 16 hour course so it's hardly MD level of information, but it's astounding to study....so it's hardly about ignorance. Yes there have been many strides made with medication and treatment and there has been progress as to the longevity of an HIV patient (provided they can afford treatment)....but don't kid yourself that it's not a deadly and vicious disease and once you catch it, you are fuct.

Agreed! So we should stop all this flu talk then :)

I wasn't referring to the medical aspects of having Aids. I was talking about people who live their lives being HIV postiive. People who continue to be productive and positive memebrs of society. People who live in loving and committed relationships- often with one partner not infected and never becoming infected.
