This image that most of the people on government assistance are grasping, entitled ne'er do wells is fallacious. Many recipients are in work in low paid jobs now and often reluctant to take advantage of the programs. I am not sure what people imagine it's like being in this low income bracket or what they think people who live in these situations aspire to. It's like they see the nutters on Jerry Springer and superimpose these values, or lack of them on 'the poor' and dismiss them as worthless.. I am not sure if that's what goes on, but the pervading idea that most people who are poor are happily living the good life off 'our tax dollars' is a bizarre one that doesn't fit any version of reality that I have ever experienced.

Consider yourself lucky (if a tad naive) to never have seen the black side of welfare recipients. I have seen/heard it.

I once heard a woman say she needed to hurry up and have another kid because they needed more money.

Another was upset cuz she couldn't have no more children, and one of hers was about to be old enough that her benefits would be cut.

And I watched interviews where people gave answers such as, "Why would I get a job paying minimum wage, and barely pay my own bills, when I can stay at home and the government will take care of me?" and other comments like that. I'm not saying ALL are like that. I'm sure there are those who take the welfare with shame in their hearts, at least at first. But you need to understand that there are a LOT of recipients who choose not to work because it's harder than getting free money from the taxpayer who works.

Interestingly, I was thinking about that and wondering if we couldn't somehow integrate a spell of agricultural labor as part of the curriculum. Not sure how, but if there is any part of the work force that lends itself to the indigent life, it's the college student. Not sure of an ethical way of doing it though.

As regards physcial labour, of course it's not without dignity, I am not suggesting it's not, but there is no step to other, better paid jobs. That's the difficulty.

It's simple. Korea does it to their males (which I think is unfair, females should do it too!). They must serve 2 years in either the military, law enforcement, fire/rescue, etc. They get a check, but it's tiny. The premise is service to country, and it's not sitting behind a desk. The US could do similar, and it would teach youngsters more appreciation of their country and the job they eventually obtain.

It is important because Barack Obama is the President of the United States of America. This is the person that the majority of those who voted believed would act in the best interests of the citizens of the United States of America. Meeting with activists who advocate legalising anywhere between 12 and 20 million foreign nationals who entered this country illegally runs contrary to that ideal. That's why people care and that's why it is important.

very well said.!!!

why is the American President spending time and money to help, ILLEGAL ALIENS,?? Shouldn't he be spending time and money to help the American Citizens.?

If the US adopts the same exact immigration laws currently in place in Mexico, how would the Mexican President respond.? and then our answer is simply, our countries have the same immigration laws so how can Mexico complain about US laws.?

Would the liberals support no citizenship for these lawbreakers. only grant them a green card status. No voting rights ever? If you desire citizenship then return to your home country and apply like the rest of the people who are using this forum to enter this country

If more citizens were armed, criminals would think twice about attacking them, Detroit Police Chief James Craig

Florida currently has more concealed-carry permit holders than any other state, with 1,269,021 issued as of May 14, 2014

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."

South Korea also doesn't invade random countries.....

2 year conscription only makes sense if you are a neutral nation, or your constitution bans declarations of offensive wars like Japan.

What makes you think I don't know this? I certainly suspect that there are those who settle for a very low standard of living for whatever reason. My question is, why would I allow this knowledge to change the premise of providing welfare to everyone who drops below a certain income level as being the best way to ensure those that do require assistance are given the assistance they need?

That pretty much describes everyone I've known on welfare, or AFDC, or bridge card or whatever. Most of them family members. People will lower their standards to unbelievable levels to avoid working. Especially when they've been raised living that lifestyle.

You have an odd family. I have never met anyone like this except for people who have mental illness issues of some kind. That's not to say they do not exist, they probably do but even though that's true, why would I want these people to start dying in the streets? I don't want to live in a US version of Jakarta thank you very much.
