My mother and I are currently living in Canada. She is planning to marry a US Citizen and will obtain permanent citizenship that way. My question is, we (my mother and I) both need permanent citizenship, so would I need to:

A.) Wait for her to get permanent resident status, THEN I start my permanent citizenship application (5-6 months x2 = 10-12 months)

or

B) Somehow we can apply at the same time, and cut the processing time by half (to clear up any questions, I am 21, unmarried, and not related to the US citizen)

Also, just to clear it up for me, it's considered immigration fraud if my mother lives with the US citizen while waiting for the permanent citizenship application to process right? The correct thing to do is marry, come back home to Canada and wait until it processes, then she can go live with him right?

After marriage, the US citizen husband can file i-130 for his wife (your mom). She waits in Canada. The process can take more or less a year. She will be under the CR1 category.

Yours is a different story since you're already 21 years old. Your US citizen step-father can no longer file i-130 for you. Your mom can file i130 for you once she immigrates to the US. You will be under the F2B category (Unmarried Son/Daughter 21 years old or above of a Lawful Permanent Resident). Waiting time for F2B Canada is 7 YEARS and you must remain unmarried during the entire process.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. 7 years is quite alarming, can you tell me why or give me sources for information?

You can check here: http://www.travel.state.gov/visa/bulletin/bulletin_6211.html

They are currently processing F2B i-130 filed in 01MAY06. Canada belongs in the All Charge -ability Areas Except Those Listed column.

The above answer is correct.

If you'd been under 18, it would have been quicker.
