I don't think it means to grow exactly the same, but to continually work towards our own personal growth. In some relationships, one person pushes themselves towards growth while the other remains complacent.

This is a *very* small part of what caused the demise of my first hellacious marriage. Growing together doesn't necessarily mean growing in the same direction at the same rate...it just means (in my mind) a willingness to expand one's horizons. One never stops growing or learning. That's what I think makes a marriage successful and quite interesting...seeing where each one is going, where each has been, and what possibly may be ahead in the future.
