What are you guys talking about? My 9mm carry will pretty much do it. But I do use hollow points to help make sure. I do have and used to carry the .45 but the Bersa 9mm is the go to now. I have a lot of confidence in it. I am hitting what I am aiming at for sure and when I want to do so.

I couldn't imagine someone living if I shot them 5 times.

I use a .45

I don't need to justify anything

I've never understood the caliber thing. For most of the 20th century ppl used .32 and .38 to defend themselves.

The important thing is to have something. I just have 9mm makarov ball ammo and I feel it's enough.

I'm teasing mostly.

I have a dozen or so "carry guns". I have to match the wardrobe and be appropriate for the occasion. My "go to" is the Kimber Ultra CDP .45 but that would be kinda gauche at a wedding. The rosewood grips clashing with any black tux I can think of. Better my engraved M19 2.5" with ivory grips for that duty. For swimming, nothing beats a S&W 640 Centennial in the "puny" .38 special. Impervious to water. You can even clean it in the dishwasher. I even have a Colt M1903 .32ACP. If I ever shoot anyone with that ...and they find out about it... they will probably kick my @ss!

Sometimes when it is cold and I can wear a heavier coat I take Dad's old M1911 (Ol' Loudmouf!) for a walk. You're right. Better to have something than have nothing. Most dirtbags would prefer not to get shot, even by a .32

It is mostly important to be a more difficult target than one of the wussies that plans to call someone else with a gun when their family is threatened.

Another thing to consider...a real consideration of modern technology...is that for the 19th and part of the 20th century a shot from a .32 or .38 would most likely prove fatal...later than sooner...if nothing else. Modern medicine and rapid response makes it possible to recover from wounds which were eventually fatal 100 years ago. If you want to be the only one testifying in court, don't count on gangrene to do the job for you.

Use enough gun.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Ah...but they DID! Well, maybe not meth...but the natural equivilent

Our experience with drug "enhanced" Moros in the Philippine Insurrection made our soldiers throw down their "Modern, New Fangled" double action .38 Colt revolvers and cry for the Army to get the old M1873 Colt out of mothballs. It also prompted an emergency order of Colt M1902 DA "Army" Revolvers chambered for the .45 Colt cartridge. This was later adopted as a substitute standard Revolver in 1909. The specifications for the new pistol demanded it be caliber .45...you know the rest. In 1917 both Colt and S&W made double action revolvers chambered for the .45 ACP

In 1985 an enlitened and wussified US military decided that the inadequate 9mm which had been around since before the .45 and was deemed inadequate had suddenly become adequate (age maybe? "good enough for Canadians, why not for us?") and the M9 auto was adopted. It took about two years for the people who actually USE a handgun in combat to kill people (not an unloaded pistol to weight down a holster in guard duty) to dump the 9mm and go back to the .45

The Marine Expeditionary Force and SOCOM use a .45 That's good enough for me.

There are lots of rumors on why the Beretta was chosen, from NATO requirements, to possible back door trade agreements with Italy etc.

One thing is for sure, the 1911 is timeless and something I want in the future (hopefully one from the first world war). In a political climate where magazine capacity is being limited by many states, 7 rounds works even in states like NY.
